dark maroon tomato clown?

i have a clown that was labeled as a tomato clown in the LFS. he looks just like a tomato clown except he is very dark maroon, not orange like all the other ones i see. is this a different species of clownfish? i was thinking about getting another tomato to pair, but i never see maroon ones anywhere...??

Maybe he's a hybrid or something? Or just an unusual color morph. You could probably add a plain tomato with it.

Tomatoes get darker with age, so an old one will be a maroon color. I find it hard to tell sometimes between old cinnamons and old tomatoes. I have an old 3" tomato and I just added a 1" sub adult with it which is bright orange. They get along great.

ok cool. i figured he's probably a cross breed or something. i'll try to get a decent picture of him, but he hides pretty much all day. it's very exciting to watch

I agree with ChunksInClemson. I have a tomato that is very dark also and added a juvenile a few weeks ago that was bright orange. He is starting to darken up now like the older one. Some people say it also has to due with them being with an anemone.

my maroon was a light maroom color when I got her, she was a wild caught one, well this was a little over a year ago and she is now so beautiful, and such a dark maroon people thinik she is redish/black. She is very healthy, I think that has something to do with it to. She has also always had an anemone. I would guess that your clown was a healthy, adult tomatoe. Do you have pictures?

i'll try to get some pictures tomorrow. my camera doesn't take very good ones in my tank, but i'll see what i can do. my fish is healthy as far as i know. it eats like a pig....too bad that's the only time it shows itself.

ok so i finally got some pics of my clown. hopefully you guys will still read this.

A LFS here has a breeding pair of tomato clowns in a display tank. The female looks a lot like yours. The male is much more orange. They have looked the same for the last 4 years at least ( that's as long as I've noticed). So my guess is it may have more to do with sex than with anemone.

solchitlins that is a great site! i've been looking for something like that. i don't know if it is rubrocinctus though....my fish doesn't have black fins. it is pretty much all the same dark maroon color except the face is a little bit lighter and the stripe is very definate.

yes, the juvies are gonna be bright orange. I am fairly confident that you have a tomato so go for it. Try to find the smallest though so the female will see it less as a threat.
