Darn girlfriend!!

OK so my girlfriend did a water change on my tank...nice huh? I thought so too...I take a gander at my tank to see one GIANT WHITE CLOUD where there should be coral and other marine life. Turns out she used 5 gallons of my Kalkwasser top off water...(one teaspoon of kalk per gallon) mixed salt with it and used that water.

Question: what do i do? Will this go away? Do i need to do another water change? I added some Carbonate to help buffer, but do i need to do anything else? I have no pH tests as a friend borrowed them and has yet to return

PLEASE ADVISE!!
I am a little scared...

Do you love her?
If so forgive her, if not dump her.
Oh you mean what to do about the tank. I would do a water change big time. Not haveing the ph test kits handy I can only guess it is bad right now.

as much as it hurts, not really her fault. she was trying to be nice. but at the same time, depends how much you care for her :)

called friend, got a different pH kit...pH 8.7 quite hi i know but as expected i think due to the unbelievable amount of kalkwasser in the tank. Alk is about 6 (dKh) which is normal (ideal on this kit is 4-6)

did a 5 gallon water change (tnak is only 20gal)...no change in white out. SHould i do more?

girlfriend is already forgiven, cant really be angry for an accident when she was only trying to help...helps that she is damn cute too...

I am scared about livestock though. Any other advice, anyone? please?

Carbon (for slime and other death products). Another water change. And another 2hrs after that. That's what I'd do.

I agree with ostrow. Do what he said and don't delay. I've seen people overdose Kalk in much smaller amounts than this and end up killing many corals while browning out the survivors. Hope everything turns out okay.

As for the girlfriend......Remember, looks aren't everything, next time go for one that has a balance between looks and intelligence.

You are much more forgiving than I would've been :).

LMAO

Jasutton, sorry about your accident.

Hans/frans:
My girlfriend is one of the smartest people i know, MPH, PhD, and MD all before the age of 27? Can you post the same credentials? If you ever get sick you had better hope she will be your doctor...i appreciate your help but please refrain from the cutting comments, especially since you dont know what you are talking about.

Update:
well i changed about 60% of the water seems like most of kalk is dissipating. Coral are all open, although they were all covered in slime. I physically removed most of the slime with some tongs.
Feather dusters look nasty...maybe they will make it if the shed their crown. Everything else seems ok, so far. Fish are ****ed though...my clownfish is giving me the evil eye.

THanks everyone for the prompt replies!! I appreciate all the help! Keep your fingers crossed...

Doc's are used to working with chemicals that are clearly marked. Was your kalkwasser marked as such or in an unmarked container? Being that she is a doctor and not an aquarist does she even know what kalkwasser is? If she doesn't speak german she might have thought it meant makeup water. If not marked it was a simple mistake.

I agree with you Jamie. She was only trying to help. Bless her heart for that. In the grand scheme of things forgiving is far more noble then carrying a grudge. While you might loose some livestock and may never truly laugh about it there may come a time when it gives you a smile.

Should the two of you marry and start your own family I imagine a day when a grandchild may be bouncing on your knee discussing going on a vacation and asking grandma to please watch over her fish while she is gone. You may smile and say something along the line of "I'm not so sure your grandma is the best person for that job."

Something I've learned in my time on this earth, short as it may be; It is the obstacles that we overcome that we remember most fondly and even moreso then our greatest accomplishments.

Anyway I hope your losses are minimal. Good luck.

Adam

did it already...about 60% water change for the day. Currently making more RO water to do another change tomorrow.

As far as the Kalk, she didnt know that it was even in there. i was mixing kalk in RO for top off water and i dont think i ever told her. To be honest i NEVER thought she would have done a water change on her own. That in itself is shocking!

Anyway lets hope no losses. I have pretty hardy corals, the most finicky being a bubble coral. Everything else is pretty hardy. Havent seen my 6 liner though...hope he is alive
