Darn six line wrass !

Who was it that said "A six line wrasse is the perfect addition to any tank. Completely reef safe." ?

I want to write them a strongly worded letter. :(

Just after I fed my tank this weekend, I watched in horror as my "reef safe" six line wrasse decided to make dessert out of my pom pom xenia ! :mad2:

I couldn't believe what I was watching ! Naturally I started freaking out, waving my arms in front of the glass, trying to scare him off.

It worked....for about 30 seconds. Since he wasn't allowed to eat the xenia, he decided to snack on my Torch coral. AAARGH !:mad2:

Naturally, *I* got stuck with the anomaly six line wrasse that doesn't follow the rules !

I grabbed my fish net, and stuck it in the tank. He's too scared of it right now to come out in the open and pick at more corals. I'll be fishing for him tonight.

Free to good home: one "reef safe" six line wrasse.

My sixline killed my new algae blenny within 4 hours of adding the blenny to the tank. Could've been in less time but I was gone for 4 hours. Poor blenny >.<

My 6-line is more aggressive towards new fish and not so much to coral. So it might have been me that said they were reef safe. I think I remember that thread.

Sorry to hear, thats something new though, I never heard of a sixline eating corals. I hear they are a pita to catch though.

They are a royal PITA. Period. Good luck Michelle, fish traps are the easiest in my opinion.

Try cutting the neck off of a water bottle as to create a funnel with one end. Now glue it back on the bottle in reverse. So you have a bottle with the neck inside of it. Try placing it in your tank with some mysis shrimp and set it in the bottom of the tank. I was able to catch my sixline this way. The fish go in but have a hard time finding their way out. Took about two days.....good luck.

I'm going to try snatching him while he sleeps tonight. He always sleeps in the same spot.

If that doesn't work, then I'll try the inverted bottle method.

Seriously? I have never heard of a wrasse, sixline, fairy, flasher eat corals. Can I see pics?

I had one once that would pick steady at a Pink/purple stylophora. One day he jumped and no more sixline wrasse. I was not happy to loose him that way. But I'll never add another one to my sps tank. They can be very aggressive with any new additions. Especially if they( fish ) are the six lines size. I tried trapping mine for 2 yrs with no luck.

The only problem I ever had with my six line was that it ate every pod, bristle worm, micro brittle star etc in the tank in about 8 weeks. He never bothered any corals and while he didn't take any crap from the other fish he never attacked them. Heck .. when I finally took down the tank to remove scratches from the acrylic even capturing him with a clear glass container was a no brainer.

i was worried my 6-line would harass my 2 new black ocellaris. he picked at them initially but they ended up tag-teaming his behind and now he leaves them completely alone. i really like him and wouldn't hesitate to get another for a different tank... just my limited experience...

The coral nipping is the only problem I've ever had with him. Other than that, he hasn't been much of a bully. And, he's one of the coolest fish to look at. So pretty !

But he's still going to end up in my sump until I can find a better home for him! .....that is, if I can catch him.

I got my flashlight and net out last night, and go figure, he's not in his usual sleeping spot. Sometimes I think this fish is smarter than I am.

I was worried about buying my sixline, but he has been a model citizen . Once my cleaner shrimp FOUGHT him for a shrimp pellet I using put in my " invert cave" ( the starfish, cleaner, and other shrimp all hang out in there) and he ( sixline) didn't hurt my shrimp. As for other fish he is the smallest next to the damsels and he never took any shots at any fish. Corals he didn't touch a thing he is interested in hunting amphipods IMO. I think it is luck and actual natural behavior. If your wrasse feels "compact" or "bored" they tend to nip attack or whatever

Wise stocking
Care for the animal
and you should have a good home but there are always exceptions.

Plus Reef Safe means safe with corals, I think some of the posts sarcastically said this when referencing it to the attack of a fish or invert.

I must be on the lucky side of this coin. My SLW is a true model citizen- no coral abuse, no neighbor abuse, and little invert. abuse (with the exception of a few hermits). He has shared a 25g nanocube with 2 small perc, a black-cap basslet, a pajama cardinal fish, and a small long-nose hawkfish for a full 2 years.
