Dart stuck

I just set up a closed loop using a Dart and OM SS. After plumbing the whole thing, I plugged it in and turned it on. The pump is not turning and it's heating up.

What do I do? Do I have to take apart the who CL? Please help. If you have any suggestions I'd really appreciate it.

was it wet? sounds like your magnet is frozen from no lube/water. i would take it off the input and see, thats what it sounds like to me...REEF-ON!!!

Dart's aren't self-priming, was it primed?

Same thing happened to me. I ended up taking it apart and then it started working but I was told on here that you can stick a screwdriver in the hole on the back of the pump by the fan and turn the pump manually and might be able to get it going that way.

You should not have to take apart the whole closed loop. You did plumb it so the pump could be removed from the system right?

Has the pump been sitting for a long time? Is it new or used?

The pump is Brand New. Never seen water. I have water going into the inlet with a 1.5" Durso type drain from the main tank and the output goes to a OM Super Squirt. I also have a ball valve with a "beed off" in case there is too much pressure.

I plugged it in and the motor got hot, didn't turn or vibrate. I have it screwed into a shelf on the back of the tank. I think I'm going to loosen the hold down, see if that tweaks it. I'll also try your screwdriver in the back, Justin. Thanks.

Mine sometimes doesnt turn over when it loses its prime. I just turn it over with a screwdriver or unplug it and plug it in a few times and it starts up.

I've never heard of putting a durso on a closed loop intake.
Are you pulling your feed from an overflow?
If so, you may be starving the pump and running it dry.

that does work. there is a slot for a flat head screw driver. just do it with the pump un plugged

How long did you have it plugged in and not running?

You should immediately unplug a pump if it is locked up. CL intake on a durso will not work very well. It needs to be flooded all the time.

His problem is the pump isn't primed... The intake of the pump needs water before you plug it in.. It wont suck water above the water line through an elbow when you start the pump...

You really need to rethink your plumbing.. If you have a durso then your intake to your closed loop is probably in an overflow.. That will never work.. There is no way your overflow will keep up with a 3600GPH pump. It will suck it dry in no time... Your intake needs to be in the main tank atleast 6-7" below the water line. HTH

He said it wasn't turning. I don't know of one single pump on the market that won't dry run. I.E. the pump WILL turn even if the impeller chamber is completely empty. Although you should not let it run this way. Try turning the screw at the back of the motor to get it going. Other than that call MDM Sequence. They have great customer service and will fix any problem.

Thanks for all the info, reefers. I'm going to work on it today.
I've got a 1.5" direct line to the input -- it's not a Durso, just a bulkhead with 2X90 degree and a ball valve into the back of the tank.

I'll let you know what happens after I wake up and have some coffee today.
