DA's 240 lagoon

So have you started cycling that thing yet??? :spin3:

Unfortunately not. I'm actually sitting at the ANA Elite lounge in Narita waiting for my flight back to the states. Some unfortunate events with the family had me on a international flight right after I finished leak testing it.

2 hours till my flight, 12 ish hours back, then I'll start filling with RO

Really love that stand. Tank looks gorgeous too.

I've skinned my 400 with plywood and was going to go with a white painted effect similar to my current tank with trim applied. Now I'm considering taking my skillsaw and running it with the blade set very shallow to put recessed lines in it to achieve the same look as this with one piece of wood.

Anyways keep it up I love it.

By skillsaw do you mean a circular saw or jig saw? The trim actually moved I a few places during the move into the house so there are a few lines that aren't perfect and taper slightly. I was debating on whether to take the circular saw to it to see if I could fix the lines. I think with my Bora clamp it should be easy. The question is it going to make it better or worse. I think the line will be perfect but I'll sacrifice the finish. I don't think I'll be able paint the new cut as cleanly by hand.

Now if you are talking about a jig saw, personally I wouldnt. I've never had good luck cutting a shallow straight line with a jig saw. The blade just jiggles too much for my liking. Then again i might not be doing it right.

My stand is all plywood and already filled/sanded to be a smooth box.

I did a test tonight and although this will take me some time I'm going to score the profile for my areas to be removed and chip out the insides 1-ply deep. You can see the result was pretty nice and this was done in 2 min.

Sorry for the hijack. Like I said yours looks rad.

Lastlast - that looks like it worked pretty well. Impressive that you did that was just a box cutter.

RO is running so now it's just a waiting game.

Looking closer at your pics though it seems like to get the same look what I'd actually want to do is score a very thin 'V' into the wood not make a wide gap like I have attempted. Your wood pieces all touch together so I'm not sure where my head was at.

actually the wood pieces do not touch. there is a 1/16th inch gap between each of the pieces and wood is a 3/4 inch. A lot of my pictures are at an angle so it ends up looking like just a line. I can try and take some macro's tonight to show you better.

I think if you were to go with the same approach you are I would paint the part you cut out with a dark grey or black and you should get the same look.

Here's a couple of macros of how the gap looks.

So it's actually 3/4 deep and the shadow is what makes it look black. It's actually painted white all the way around.

Seems like the tank was barely filled when I went to bed last night. This morning it's about 1/3 of the way. Slow going but the yard is getting a good watering at least.

Went ahead and installed the dosing pump last night as well. Made a bracket for it out of some scrap acrylic. Turned out reasonably well.
Just the stand and containers.

With the pump

Thanks for taking the time to shoot those I appreciate it.

Nice work with the acrylic! Wish I could do that... what's the volume of those dosing compartments? Currently I use the BRS jugs and they drain far too quickly...

Theyre about a gallon and a half. The were my old ones from my 110 but I figured I would just use them for now and make new ones one I determined my usage for a month.

I should have moved to dosing years ago. I was really close to changing everything over on this tank but never pulled the trigger. Its just so much more straight forward and simple than Ca reactors and kalkwasser.

not much, family, work, tank, the usual :)

started a 250 myself about 4 months ago (there is a build thread here a couple of pages back)

Thanks Ace. Long time no see. What ya been up to lately?

great job on that stand and dosing setup, gonna be a very nice setup when all is said and done!

I changed over a few years ago and never looked back. I always had chronically low PH too so the calcium reactor didn't really help the situation. Since I've added the Genesis for the automatic water changes dosing is a no brainer since I never have to worry about the ionic imbalance.

Sweet, glad to know you're back in the game. I always loved checking out that room divider. I'm sure your new tank is just as nice.

You got salt in that thing yet???? Haven't you seen that new TV show "Tanked"??? You should have had $5000 worth of fish swimming in that thing the day you got it on the stand!!!!

Just kidding! Take your time. You're doing it right. Keep up the good work.

Very nice build!!

Thanks epic1

Awesome work!

Thanks tonyespinoza

Salt went in on Friday and I let it mix for 24 hours. I had to go with Reef Crystals because that is all I could find locally in enough quantity to fill the tank. I remember why I stopped using this stuff. Almost two days later its still not completely clear :angryfire:. I plan on going back to the Tropic Marin Pro Reef as soon as I can get some ordered.
I pulled some of the 300# of live rock that I have had cycling in the garage for the last month or so and started aquascaping. The plan is to have three islands in each of the corners then an open sand area in the third. I also like channels created by coral as they grow like Oregon Reef or the Coral Gardener have so I will be leaving wide channels between each of the islands to hopefully create this same look as corals grow in.

Here's what I have to start:

The front left will be the open sand area. The back right is just a pile of rocks I am using to aquascape and will be removed.

Few more views

I'll probably be working on this for the rest of the weekend to get right. With 3 views its tough to get right.

As you can tell the water is still murky from the Reef Crystals. The skimmer is doing a good job of pulling a lot of the crud out but I decided to go ahead and start the zeovit cycle to see if it would help.

Starting with the full dosage for now then I'll scale it back to half in a few months.

Sand has been added. I decided to try the Tropic Eden brand this time and I have to say I love it! I used 1/2 reef flakes and 1/2 mini flakes and the consistency is perfect.

The best part is how sparkling clean the sand is. I washed 30 lbs of sand in less than a few min but the water was never really murky. There were a few bits of something that floated to the top but that's it. 24 hours in RO and phosphates were 0.

Easily the best sand I've dealt with.

I ordered 120 lbs but only used 90 of it. One bag busted in shipping and I just decided to hold off on the other. I might add it later or use it down the road since I replace my sandbed at least once year anyways.

The one problem I did run into was being over confident that the sand would not cloud the tank since it was so clean so I dumped it all in at once. Now the tank is cloudy again. Opps.... I'll post some pictures after it clears up again.

A few pics of the tank with sand. The random rocks will come out and I will also be moving two island from my existing tank in.

Went ahead and threw some xenia I've been wanting to get out of the other DT in to get an idea of flow.

I also got the refugium lights setup so I went ahead and added some marco algae. I've got some cords to clean up. I might add two more on the other side as well
