DAS skimmer club

what kind of feed pump do you use.....or is it gravity fed.....
i might have missed it...but was the skimmer always getting fed and when you turn on the skimmer ...it overflows? or do you feed and and turn on the skimmer at the same time?

can anyone give me a measurement for the footprint of the ex-1 ...i seen it on one of the pages...but looking through alll that would be hell...
thinking if i should go with the EX-1 or wait for the extreme's....but really leaning toward the DAS becauses its a recirculating skimmer(wont have to worry about water height in the sump,if i do decide to put it in there,..)

About 3 weeks. The water level with out the recircs on is maybe a milimeter above where the clear tube reaches the bottom portion of the black piece (neck) the cup connects to. What do you call that thing? I thought I read that we should adjust the water level with the ball valve to a static position and then use the air valves to fine tune it. Does that sound right?

I'm using a mj1200 turned way down with the ball valve. It only over flows when I turn on the recircs(feed pump is already on) but briefly and then some random time during the night.

It shouldn't over flow at all when the recirc pump is turned on. I would close the air valve a little to lower the bubble breaking level.

all of a sudden my skimmer stopped making foam for some reason.....i dont understand, is it b/c i have no bio-load?

mine would over flow also. the white foam would hit the top then start pulling in water. and only did it when i turned on the recerc pumps. mine quit doing it after about 3 weeks to a month. during that time i just ran it with low flow. after a month my skimmer realy started to kick in and quiet down. id maybe give it another week or so and see how it does.

what size tank is it runing on? my ex2 on my 75g will skim for a while then stop making the bubbles. then it will kick back in a little later.

It could be if you literally mean no bio-load as in a sterile tank with only water.

You should keep an eye on the little air intake posts on the recirc pump that the airline slides over. These can eventually clog up with a little salt build-up. My skimmer didnt quit foaming in the neck but it quit flowing skimmate into the cup. I checked the air intake with my meter and found that one of the pumps was not pulling enough air. Checked it and it was half closed with salt build-up. I cleaned it and was good to go again. You may want to check that.

I usually let the airlines pull in a little bit of ro/di water every couple of weeks but hadnt done it for a while. If you let them suck up some fresh water regularly they wont clog up.

If Orca had them in stock I would get it from him. I think he can sell them a little cheaper than Petorama. However, if he doesn't have on on hand I would get it from Petorama since they seem to get them first.

Does orca stock them now? I thought all the DAS skimmer where drop ship from DAS.

Unless you want something custom done to the skimmer it really doesn't matter where you get it from.

whats the possiblility of getting a messed up skimmer. What types of checks should i do after receiving it???

I don't think it will be messed up, maybe broken with ups doesn't "handle it with care."

I would just make sure the pump work and the skimmer body doesn't leak water.

Pet-o-rama online is DAS. They get them first because they have them made. ORCA gets them from DAS.

When you guys say the EX-1 overflows do you mean the cup just fills up with water, or it actually flows out the cap?
