Dave's 150G Starphire Zeo Reef~

Hey Dave - nice system bud. I can't wait to see the final product.

I was wondering, how did your Oct. 08 crash happen? Did circulation get stopped due to the PH failure?

Murray- One of my maxi-mods seized up on me and I had no idea? I guess you could say I slacked off a bit for not checking up but frankly it appeared as though all was well to me:confused:

The next thing I know I started smelling this electrical burning smell in the living room where the tank was. I hunted hi and low for the source and found nothing??? I checked all the power cords, outlets... EVERYTHING, that you would think to check that is, and found nothing.

Then one fateful morning in October the problem revealed itself in a way that was unmistakable... ALL of my corals were bone white:confused:   My skimmer was going NUTS overflowing like mad, it was just awful! At this point I still didn't realize what it was, I still smelled the electrical smell but hadn't tracked it down, yet.

At this point I'm in shock and awe wondering what the *BLEEP* just happened.... Well, I turned off the skimmer and was taking a closer look at the tank at this point. I rechecked all the wiring underneath, nothing??? I started looking at my neptune for stats and my orp was just way out of whack?

At this point the electrical smell thing is really getting to me... Being right up over the top of the tank I notice that the smell is stronger than anywhere in the living room? Hmm, so, I start to investigate. It can't be the "powerheads" I thought? They're "underwater", NO WAY, but I decided to check it out. The one on the right was ok... wait a minute, hmm, the one on the left, it's not moving at all and should be, what the heck?

So, I grabbed a hold of the left one and it was hotter than the blazes!!! :eek1: I proceeded to unplug it and found the source of my problem, much to my dismay of course! I wish I had taken a picture to warn everyone but frankly I was too ticked off and frustrated to think straight.

Upon closer inspection the powerhead was definitely the problem. It must have been frozen for QUITE some time, and I didn't even know(BAD AQUARIST, BAD... BOY). When I removed the shroud and went to pull the impeller out I had quite a time. It was "stuck" and hard to remove. Finally I got it out and saw the horror... (don't you love how dramatic I'm being???)

Anyway, the impeller was just fried and the inside of pump where the impeller slides in was WARPED and burnt! Must have been trying real hard to get that impeller to move and got super hot in the process??? Hot enough to cause it to warp, and I'm not kidding, CHAR the inside of the pump where the impeller slides in. It was a mess:(

Well, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. The whole thing killed off my stonies, LPS, and only left me with surprisingly some zoa's and my fish, thank goodness! I have a Royal Gramma that I've had for over 8 years now, he's a champ!

So, let this be a warning to you all! Don't get lazy or assuming in thinking that "all is well" with your equipment. I have sworn off maxi's for the most part as I was going batty with their chatter and such any way and sucked it up and got some Tunze's that I had been wanting for so long anyway. This disaster was just the excuse I needed to upgrade. The charred remains of the maxi were grate to show my wife and convince her we needed to spend the extra money:D Sorry, but I think it was justified personally!

I had a lot of time and money invested to this tank in it's previous incarnation. I'll try to find some old pics to post maybe? I had some very nice stuff, if I do say so myself!

Wow Dave. What a drag man. After reading this, I just went downstairs to do a visual on my pumps.

Drilling down on the cause, I assume it was caused by whatever volatiles are released from that particular plastic when it gets hot enough to melt. If you could smell it in the room, the concentrations must have been huge.

A quick search yielded the following material, which indicates you may have had a release of chlorine (really bad) and/or tetrachloro-dibenzo-dioxin (holy crap! dioxin!!!!!) in your water:

Looking forward to seeing how the new tank goes, mi amigo. I am in the process of setting up a new zeo tank myself.

mikid- Hi, I can't post any pics right now, my cabinet maker friend has the light rack for canopy measurements and I won't have it back till Sunday.

However, you can look here http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1482007&perpage=25&pagenumber=4 My light rack will be modeled in this fashion. I'll be using two lumenmax elite reflectors with 2x 250watt Radium bulbs and Galaxay ballasts to drive them. Additionally I'll be using 4x 54watt t5's. You can read the details in the posts above but unfortunately you'll have to wait a bit on some pics, sorry.

make sure you post pics of the skimmer when you get it. I was all over that skimmer, but I ended up finding a deal on a ATB.

vanillagorila- Will do!

dustinP- Went with Aquarium Specialty. Scott's really been super through this build. I've used him for the greater bulk of my purchases with great service!

Time for an update....

Time for an update....

Well guys it's been awhile and I didn't want you to think I'd forgotten any of you. I've been super busy lately and haven't had time to keep this thread up so, I thought I'd throw ya'll a bone:D

Canopy is done

Just got some pics of my canopy tonight from my buddy whose building it for me and thought I'd put a few pics up.... Please forgive the crappy cell phone pics.

All that's left to do is sand, stain and seal it! I know everyone always says this but, the pictures just really don't begin to do it justice. It's not even stained yet and I'm thoroughly impressed with my friends carpentry talents! Doesn't hurt to know a master cabinet builder at all now does it:D

My buddy tells me I should take delivery of the finished product "this" Sunday!

The Transfer

I'm looking to break down my existing tank this weekend to make way for the new one now that the stand should be ready. This is definitely the part I'm looking forward to LEAST of all.... I've been dreading this part of the process but, I figure it'll just put me that much closer to being all done though!

Some older pics

Last of all, I thought I'd include a couple of older pics from one of the prior incarnations of my existing tank to commemorate this momentous occasion!

I tried to find some more recent pics but these were all I had. Hope you enjoy!

I'll be pretty busy this weekend with the break down but I'll do my best to take pics and post up on the progress.

I'm REALLY getting excited now...

The Stand Is In

The stand turned out even better than I imagined. So glad my buddy decided to take part in this project of mine! If anyone needs or wants a new stand and canopy I highly recommend him!!!

Finally, the tank!

I finally got the tank back last week and was waiting until I got the stand to unwrap it and have a good look at it in all it's glory. Lee Mar did a FANTASTIC job, I'm very impressed with how this tank turned out.

Its' New Home

The new tank will reside in place of the old one and really stands out in comparison the old one. It really dominates the room and I have to say... I LIKE IT!!!

Tomorrow I'll do a wet test and just finish up on the light rack. I think I may have the aluminum powder coated... I got this idea from Leanardo and his newest build. Thanks for the idea Leo!

Just got the suspension kit today for the canopy so, that is another item on the to do list. Finally, I'm in limbo waiting for my new skimmer, the Bubble King Cone Skimmer. Can't really do much without it... unless someone's got an extra skimmer they want to loan me:lol: I'm really bummed... I've been looking through Craigslist and on Ebay and haven't found a cheapy substitute as yet. I just hope they make it in sooner than later:mixed:

I'll do my best to keep you all posted...

Thanks for stopping in!

I have the feeling your going to be waiting for that skimmer for a while. on one of the threads proline said the first shipment sold out in one hour. I have a extra H&S just sitting in my livingroom.

Great project.

I really like the color of that stain. What brand/color is it?

It's a blend of a couple stains that my buddy and I came up with. It really makes the Alder wood POP, just gorgeous!

I had Frazee color match it, if you're interested I can PM you the phone number of the store and give you the name we came up with to ask for.
