Dave's 150G Starphire Zeo Reef~

you know it's funny. I have done the lights out strategy on several tanks without any issues. Some where mixed tanks with sps and others almost all sps. BUT, the one time I did it on my own mixed tank, I had some issues with my sps as well. It was mostly the smaller colonies on plugs that took the beating

That's what happened with me too, the ones on plugs were the hardest hit. I did lose most of a colony of Pink Lemonade though... Thankfully I had several frags of it that surprisingly were not affected! Also have a small colony of ORA Cali Tort that looks like it could go either way, still very pale and losing some bits of tissue at this point.

Dave, awesome build! I just got all caught up and subscribed.

I was having great success on my SPS reef until I dumped way too much food in the tank and had to battle a bad case of dino's. Well I did a 5 day lights out and on top of that didnt run my return pump / skimmer either which was way dumb. (was vinegar soaking all my main pumps and got side tracked)

Well after the 5 days.. I let ambient light in. I only lost my biggest SPS colony, small baseball sized but still.. my strongest coral sofar and it lost the battle. I fragged it all up and now about a month later only 4 little polyps (as of last night) are left and hopefully they will pull through and regrow! I loved that piece~! so I know how you feel! Keep up the great work !

Dave where ya been? How's everthing going? I saw on the other forum that Ramzy sent some frags your way...what's up? Hope all is OK

Sorry to be out of touch here for so long guys... Things have been very hectic for me lately. I lost my computer so that's the main reason I've been away so long. On top of that I'm still have some strange unexplained problems with some of my corals lately? Don't know why but I'm considering modifying my Zeo usage.

Thinking of ditching the stones and just using the basic four... I started using the new Tropic Marin Bio-Aciff salt and have been trying to find a happy medium with my tank and Zeo usage since. Apparently the Bio-Actiff has some carbon source in it and was initially helping things out but has since become a bit of an issue.

I've cut my Start2 dosage considerably and only dosing the basic four for a long time now. I think I'm going to take my Zeo Rx off line and see how it goes for awhile.

Thanks Dan and Ramzy for your support, hope all is well for you both!~

Thanks for your support and interest Chris, I appreciate it!~

This hobby can be very exasperating some times....

Sorry to hear about the issues you’re having but glad to hear that you’re alright. Like Sara said we were starting to get nervous. Thought that the maybe the desert sun had turned you into bones or something. Hang in there man, you just have to find the key to the puzzle to solve the mystery. (Yeah I know easier said than done, still trying to find my key too.)

im sure it will all pull through. I like to keep stuff simple as far as dosing and have never gotten the itch to do any zeo or other products of that nature. I do on the other hand dose vodka/vinegar to help with the nitrates. I am wanting to look into some bio pellets after more people get them figured out!!!

I just got here to phx a few days ago for a family visit and need to hit up some local tanks and lfs's!!!

Ditch the zeo bro. Trust me :) I know its a hard decision to make considering all the hard work everyone puts into the regimen and the cost involved but ive seen it way too many times that zeo users are unsucessful and constantly running into hurdles. Ive gone through it myself and ive seen all my friends use it on their big tanks and ditch it. Their are a ton of other options out their for running a bacteria system and ones that are 10x more simple. Hope all is well!

Thanks to all of you for your well wishes and continued support, I very much appreciate it!~

Ramzy, I'm definitely thinking of other options... I can look back to when things were so much simpler. I had very good results for a long stretch but have grown very frustrated as of late.

Tony, I'll send you a PM but don't know how quickly I can get back to you. Thanks for your input, I'm up for anything at this point.

Been in this game for well over a decade and... well, I'm not gonna go there. I'm hanging tough for now and don't want to be negative. :crazy1:

It's cool to read through this. I live in Ohio and bought the tank earlier this year. It's a beautiful tank and the wood work is top notch.
