DC pumps for return and and skimmer

Not necessary for a skimmer as they are typically on a set speed and left there continuously. A DC pump gives the ability to increase/decrease the flow. They are more popular for the return.
I see very little advantage to DC over AC in any but closed loop applications where the ability to vary flow is actually useful. As with all things, the actual answers depend upon your specific implementation, so if you want good guidance it would help to know something about your system and how you'd plan to use the pump. For example, some skimmers need pumps that can develop good pressure, which eliminates all but the most expensive DC pumps. Likewise if you will need a pump to handle higher head pressure. Comparing the energy usage of a high head pressure AC pump to a DC pump is apples and oranges.
I'm just getting into the hobby. My plan is to pick up a RS Reefer 250. Not planning on a closed system. Just trying to get the basics down. Sounds like just a good quality AC is the way to go. I am having trouble deciding on a skimmer for this system. I don't mind spending the money to get a good one. The problem seems to be that the 65 gal system is on small side when looking for a skimmer. I Plan on having a heavy bioload. Any suggestions?

Heavy bio load in a 65 gal system, run a skimmer rated for double the water volume. Bubble Magus 5 or 7. Aquamaxx is also a good brand.

Usually the only mention advantage is the lower watts to deliver a given volume, Mayabe maybe not. Mag drive pumps reduce the watts drawn as flow diminishes due to back pressure. I have used a Mag dr on my skimmer and control flow with a gate valve. I also us one on my ATS so I can dial in the flow rate (Apex FMM module needed). I can see the watts change with a Kill-o-watt.
