DCartier's 560G Blue Window

Images don't show for me - when I attempt to open them in a new tab, it asks for me to sign in to google.

Weird. My test to make sure that they are visible is to open the page in Safari that is not logged into a Google account, and they show in that browser.

I use imgur to upload photos now. Need to resize the image with paint or photoshop first though.

I have the exact same tank size as you. I used about 400lbs of dry rocks. It doesn't look like much inside. Giving it a "minimalist" look. I also put in about 50liter of Siporax in my sump for bio filtration.

My new tank is a bit of a monster

My new tank is a bit of a monster

When I arrived at Miracles I was a bit surprised at the scale of the new tank. I was contemplating getting it 4ft wide rather than 3ft, but after seeing it, 3ft is plenty wide enough.

While I was there I stopped at a 5000 gallon tank they were building. Yikes, I would rather not have to don hip waders to do maintenance! But it was pretty cool. My fishroom would have ended up being, well a fishroom.

Here are the photos of it before the silicon has been cleaned up. The eurobrace on the overflow end was there, but was removed before the photos. I asked if they could drill a couple of cordways in it, and before I knew they had it removed and the holes drilled.

The overflow grating is sitting against the back of the overflow in the photos, but it slides into slots in the overflow.

As always, let me know if the photos show up.

I know everyone hates cross-braces but I would really suggest adding two across the top for such a long tank. Just my opinion, of course.

Thanks for the suggestion Dave. I will run it by Miracles. I seem to recall that I did ask them originally when I saw the drawings for the tank and was surprised that no cross braces were used. They said with 3/4" glass and euro bracing that they were not required. The empty tank weights a 1000 lbs!

I emailed Derrick at Miracles about possible cross braces. He repeated it was not necessary, but since I am running 4 gyres, that it would not be a bad idea.

So now I have to be sure that cross braces are not going to drive me crazy. I was relieved when I found that it would not have cross braces, so it will take some getting used to the idea.

The lights that I am using are AP700's, 5 in total. They will be mounted from front to back with each unit covering 24" of the length. As they will be mounted from front to back, the actual footprint will be 24" x 36". Anyways, to make the braces not interfere with the lights, the only spacing that makes sense is on 24" centers. That would mean a brace at 24", 48", 72" and 96". Although I know that this will greatly strengthen the tank, I can't help but already miss that 10 ft of pure unobstructed access. The actual access way in each section will be 20" x 28" when the braces and euro bracing is accounted for. Not going to make it any easier to reach the bottom directly under a brace. But I just measured my reach, 27" and the tank is already a 30" tank, so I was already a behind the eight ball in that regard.

Looking for feedback, go with 4 braces and hopefully increase the longevity of the tank or go with none?

I would definitely suggest cross braces. That is a long tank.I live with 2 myself and it is not really a big issue with shadowing. You loose maybe 50 PAR but only on a thin sliver of area....BUT I sleep at night!!!!!

Love your transparent overflows. Big black boxes internal sucks

Thanks. I made a point of asking for an external overflow box. One of the perks of a custom designed tank. When I was planning on using 300 DD originally, trying to think of a way to deal with the 2 overflows was stressing me. Removing the need to try to hide them using aquascaping was a huge relief.

I agree. Very long tank. I was a bit taken back at how long it was when I saw in person for the first time.

I have decided to heed the advice of members and have requested 2 cross braces, one at 48" and one at 72". With that positioning, my center AP700 should not be affected by the cross braces. I have 8 80W T5's that I was planning to also use, and if I go ahead with those, only a 4" strip towards the end of each bulb (where it crosses a brace) will be affected. However I may hold off on the T5's anyway and start off with AP700's only. I can grow LPS all day long, but the SPS touch eludes me for the most part. We will see how my DIY DyMiCo filter turns out and if I have reasonable results with Montipora.

Dennis,
Very nice. Huge, in fact. What is that existing lip / brace made of? Glass, acrylic or poly-carbonate?

Also, what will the braces you are adding be made of?

Regarding the dry rock. I would go with dry Pukani. I would swear that it is half the weight for the same physical volume of rock. You should verify that but it feels much lighter and at only $1.20 a pound more, would probably cover at least the same volume, dollar for dollar.
