"De-Coppering" a tank

...yeah we got hit with ich...
...been using "Cuprisorb" (or whatever the SeaChem stuff is called)
....been using it OVER and Over and over (250ML bag recharged)

....can't detect copper using API test kit ..... but snails added to tank keep dying, GSP is 50/50 (open vs., closed) while shrooms look unaffected

....I'm thinking better test kit but gheez I've run that bag of Cuprisorb over 4x right under the sump inlet pipe, so surely by now the coppers gone or no?

any theories or suggestions to "de-copper" and/or test appreciated
P.S. which invert makes the best "Canary"

How big is your hospital tank? When I'm finished with the treatment, and have everything transferred to the DT, I just dispose of the water that was medicated, clean the tank and refill. I will run some rox carbon in a reactor to make sure, but only to pick up any residue that may be remaining.

I'm guessing it's the DT, not a HT.

Are you trying to make this a reef? Did you treat with rocks, sand in the tank?

appreciate the replies, sorry about the lack of detail....

yeah it was originally a 48" 150G FOWLR , but we always intended to later add snails, shrooms & easy softies...

I'm guessing about 80% of the original "treated" water has been changed, but the tank does have about 120# or LR and 3" of "sand" ...

I treated it with enough cprisord that one would suppose any copper bound in the substate shudda leached back into the water column by now...maybe not?


...just semi-useful info for any passerby; Marine bettas, bangai's and hawfish were toally unfazed by the ich....kina wierd given the severity of the outbreak...

It's likely leeching slowly out of the live rock... Unfortunately there's not really a good way to tell how long it'll take for it to all be gone.

Keep in mind the toxic levels for inverts can be in the ppb range. This is well below the resolution of any hobby grade test kits. Unfortunately there is no telling how much cuprisorb you will have to run. I may try running polyfilters as well as continuing water changes. Good luck.

Funny, CB shrimp seems fine also....but again, not one single snail is alive...

yeah I have used polyfilters in the past, I wonder if they will likewise reverse the ill effects of that Seachem phosphate remover that leathers don't like (also has a phos issue and GFO was getting cost prohibitive)

....now trying to figure out how to strategically deploy them given my setup

Knowing the investment in $$$, and blood, sweat and tears that go into this hobby, I think if you don't remove your substrate and rock, you're just asking for more trouble. I would also remove any type of absorbing media, and thoroughly clean all equipment that was in use on your system, i.e. pumps, skimmers, reactor's, etc.

ya mon:
- Carbon (a bag right under my skimmer output) ;
- Cuprisorb (250ml at least 2-3x already, and just re-gen'd another bag for a 3rd shot
-Polyfilter ...just placed a new pad right under my sump inflow from the tank. ...got a 2nd new pad on deck

I see more GSP opening up, but see NO TRACE of the blue legged hermits or the dwarf certiths or periwinkles I added 2 days ago....

I agree. LR $ substrate can hold on to Cu a long time; this also makes proper dosing almost impossible. Don't fall for the old myth that silicon sealant absorbs Cu, it doesn't.
