I have a bunch of rock not much maybe 10 lbs or so thats been sitting in a bucket dry for about a year. what everyone do before they put it in their tank? I thought about bleaching it just for cosmetic reasons but no idea how people do it

I would use white vinegar.Put the rock in the bucket then pour about a gal or 2 of vinegar in it ,soak for about 2-3 days. It'll start to foamup from the acid and carbonate rock reacting. Then just give it a little scrubbing action while rinsing in saltwater or ro water. You'll notice the outer layer of the rock will be chalky thats what you want to remove with the toothbrush.

Some people use bleach but I would think it would be more effective if you were trying to remove strip rock that was covered in green hair alage ,sponges and things.I dont know how bleach would compare to using vinegar whitch would strip the rock of phosphate and heavy metals that may be there. Using the bleach you would also have to use a declorinator or let it air out whitch could take as long as a few weeks.
Good luck with whitchever route and Happy Easter.

I haven't bleached rock, but I've bleached plenty of other equipment, including tanks. I usually let the items soak for a day in a cold water/bleach mix. I'll rinse off and then soak in hot water, let sit overnight and then do it again 2 or 3 times more. I've never had any issues using this method. Good luck!

Bleach and vinegar.
A bath in vinegar and water( about 50/50 mix) overnight or heavily diluted muriatic acid for about 20 minutes will dissolve the rocks surface area. Careful with the muriatic acid it will burn you .A hard rinse say with a hose will remove the dissolved calcium carbonate and anything stuck to it such as PO4 or copper.

An overnight soak in a solution of bleach and water will remove organic material. Resoaking in clean fresh water with a dose of dechlorinator and then drying time of a week or so should be fine.

Personally , I do both , bleach then the acid bath( vinegar or muriatic acid) with suspect dry rock.
