my xenia all shriveled up and stayed that way for like 3 days and is now turning tannish white and desintegrating i went to andys animals and he tested my water and said my hardness was at about a 7 and xenia likes it around 12 or 13 is this true? and would this be the only thing that could cause this? anyways he sold me some buffer to regulate it. ive been useing it as directed on the package for about 1 week and everything seems fine..... opinions anyone? also i have all kinds of corals in my tank mostly softies shrooms zoas hammer and frogspawn a rose leather and 1 small monticap frag nothing else seems to be affected from this. i would also appreciate is if anyone has any xenia that they could toss my way due to my unfortunate loss. thanks

Well,,,,, I'm not sure where to begin on that.

I'm sure he accidently called it hardness instead of alkalinity so I won't go there. 7dKh is NSW and many many people keep thier tanks at 7. I prefer to keep mine at 9-10. The ONLY reason for that is because tanks have a daily calcium/alkalinity useage. My tank uses about 2.8 dKh per day although it does cycle some with season from 1-4 per day. This should be corrected for by a BALANCED ca/alk addition. i.e. 2 part, kalkwasser, ca reactor. By maintaining the dKh above NSW levels, it can save your rear if you miss, dose later in the day than usual, run out of kalkwasser and or ca reactor media, etc.

If you constantly add just buffer, you ca levels will slowly drop. Many think that one or the other is the only one being used but it's due to test kit user error and/or the test kit margin of error.

How long has the tank in question been set up?

i would check water anyway to make sure water parameters are what they should be, xenia especially pulsating xenia or waving hand kind are moderate to expert only according to many websites. Plus they can be easily damaged by other corals especially frogspawn or hammercoral. i keep mine by themselves not close to no other corals.

the tank has been set up for roughly 5 to 6 months the xenia that i had wasnt close to anyother corals and i tested my water... according to my kit everything is within what it should be. what do i need to do to fix this?

Sometimes, Xenia just melts away in people's tanks....for no known reason.

You need to get a ca, alk, mag, and phosphate test kits. Unless you have massive die off, the ammonia and nitrite should go bad before you hardly use them.

To keep up with tank demand (don't just guess a number or even follow the "safe" directions on the bottle), you will need to do some regular testing to determine amounts.

Here are a couple hours of reading on the subjects mentioned:

Even when everything is perfect. It's one of those mysteries. Then you try a month later and it grows so fast you can't get rid of it all.

Some say iodine supplements help it to grow and thrive in tanks.
It definatly can grow like a weed in some tanks and die quick in others.

also fialed to mention xenia in the 10 gallon is all shriveled up and not opening but still alive the xenia that died is in my 29 2 total different systems with 50% water changes done every sunday.

Get good kits. Go to the www.thereefstop as he isn't accepting PMs from this board nor does he come on it really anymore.

Well since Chad commented in this thread, that would be a good place to check. :D

thanks for all of the info guys im going to try and get test kits asap but its going to have to wait till the 28th when i get paid nest unless som1 has an extra 1 laying around somewhere

you do know that you could just go some place reputiple such as gateway he can perform the test you need and give you advise it may cost a buck or two but it is cheaper than purchasing the test them selves and not understanding the chemestry for which you are embarking

I would have to agree with the iodine,my xenia was growing like a weed then for no reason it started melting away.i started to dose just a small amount of iodine (it can be overdosed very easily)and things started looking better. You may also want to reduce the water changes to 20% instead of 50%,could possible be getting rid of to much good bacteria in the water column with a 50% water change every Sunday.JMO.

i have tons of xenia if you want.
i live in wentzville and as of this week only, work in chesterfield.
