Debating Kalkwasser Dosing

I can't seem to make up my mind if I want to dose Kalk from the fish store (thinking two little fishies, unless there is a better brand) or Mrs Wages. I've read a ton on Mrs. Wages, but I'm still hesitant on whether I should use it because the last thing I'd want is to kill off everything in my tank because of impurities...

Any help or experience would be great!

Thanks! :fish2:

I can't find ms wages lol, been hitting all the grocery stores, but I've got a pile of purple up to go through first, but I'm all about saving the money on the lime, and an awful lot of ppl seem to have good results with it

i can't find mrs. wages where i live so i use tropic marin kalk. i used seachem kalk before but the big bottles were out of stock so i switched to tropic marin. i've read a lot of u.s reefers use mrs. wages and have no problem. i would also use it if i could find it. it's also food grade stuff so i think it's pretty safe to use it.

Over the years, I've used a few brands, i.e. BRS, Kent, etc., I'm sure they're all fine. I preferred Mrs. Wages primarily because it was food grade vs lab grade, with seemingly less impurities, and ultimately cheaper. Although, it's a seasonal product in some local stores, and not available year round. I used to buy it on line at Walmart or Ace hardware.

Um, didn't realize so many folks didn't have Amazon Prime. Anytime I look to buy anything for my tank I look to see if I can get it cheaper on prime and negate the shipping cost.

Never have had a purity issue with Mrs Wages. It's for people food, so nothing too exotic, and in terms of what's in it, I dump two pounds of it into a 32 gallon ro/di and keep adding ro/di for several months...which finally leaves me with a scant white residue I hose out before redoing. Whatever's left might be a question, but mostly it dissolves on one stir and leaves practically nothing behind. Now---is there anything else that did dissolve? Nothing that ever caused a problem. And at 5.00 for two pounds, it's cheap.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think I'll try mrs wages first and if I can't find any then I'll get stuff from the store :)

Well this kinda of sucks. Looking around and it seems no store in Ontario sell mrs wages... There are online places but it's really expensive. $40-$50 for a single 1lb bag cuz of shipping... Probably cheaper to just get the regular stuff... :(

Good grief. What do Canadians use for lime when they want to make cucumber pickles?

Are you sure that's not the 6 - 1lb. bag package? Down here that's usually between $25 to $30 USD, obviously with the exchange rate it would be more there.

I'd expect it would be everywhere in the south but no, none of the 8 walmarts between me and my workplace, and I've only checked like 15 or so grocery stores.
I'm in Georgia and my Walmarts all have it.

It's not in the food section though. They have a canning section in the middle of home goods and that's where I found it.

Just found some in Walmart in Tallahassee and it was $2.88 a pound. I'll drop two lbs in my 32 gal brute RO/DI tomorrow and stir. Hope it works. My calcium is a little low.
