Decent HOB protein skimmer

Any one have any recommendations on HOB protein skimmers. I've been doing some research and the reviews are some what mixed. I was thinking of getting a CPR Series Bak Pak. Anyone have any experience with these, or suggestions on other types.

Not personal experience. But a fellow reefer got away from them due to noise and looks. Having the pump and large outlet inside your display isn't always pleasing to the eye. The aquamaxx hob 1 is said to be pretty good.

What size tank? I had a bak pak am now running a reef octo bh2000. There is no comparison between the 2!! The reef octo has the pump mounted outside the tank and its quiet. There is also the bh1000 for smaller tanks and the bh90 which is a hob but its a "cone" like an in sump skimmer

I had a hob AquaMaxx skimmer on my 60g tank just recently broke down for a bigger tank. I was pleased with it performance and would recomended.

Those reef Octopus are amazing. But big and ur gonna see the the collections cup ok the back and I went with a tunze 9004 in tank. Just because I didn't like the hob. And it's doing a good job. And it can't be seen. Literally u jsut see the cup sticking up. I'm sure the octo out performs the tunze. But the astetics are much better with the tunze

I just got the reef octopus bh1000 a week and a half ago and love it. I like it because the pump isn't in the tank. It is pretty big but I have the outlet covered up pretty well by one of my powerheads so its kind of a wash on that part of the equipment in the tank look I hate. Mine is very quiet and stopped putting out microbubbles after a day or two. The only real audible noise from the unit is the sound of the water flowing down the return pipe but that can be blocked out by placing a piece of acrylic over the open return chamber.

I just ordered a eshopps hob. It's very similar to the insump designed skimmers and is priced right. They say it pulls an amazing amount of gunk. Mine will be here tomorrow
