decreasing the flow on a pump?

I've got a 12 gallon cadlights all in one. Got it used.

The pump it came with is a boyu something or other. Blows water around REALLY hard. My hammer doesn't seem happy in the flow. But, it's such a small tank that there's nowhere I can really put it that has a lower flow.

How do I decrease the flow?

Im guessing this is a powerhead? If its a powerhead you cant dial the flow down unless it is a controllable dc pump, your best option if you cant move it so it dispearces the water more is to buy a smaller pump.

No, it's a little pump like you'd see in the back of a biocube.

Oh a return pump, you can add a small ballvalve on the output line to control the flow.
