Where was this emperor collected? Red sea? Looks, like it might have an orange tail, but with a streamer!!!

That Prognathodes falcifer is gorgeous!

i'm not sure. there are two geographical variants to the emperor. streamers and no streamers.

the interesting thing about this one is half it's face is black while the other half is normal.

i will put up my angel when i get him
He has been with the collector for 5 days now and is eating
If he has him for 3 weeks and doing fine
Then i will take him

Chaetodon sacntaehelenae

Hi Lemon,

It was me who took these pictures on ASI and I am just curious where you found them. If my informations are correct C sancthelenae lives on both ASI and St. Helena, whereas C. resplendens lives just on ASI. On ASI you can find both fishes in huge numbers, but C. resplendens lives rather deep, never seen them shallower than 80 to 100 ft.

oh hi jens. so sorry. i did not know these photos are yours. my friend sent it to me and i thought it would be nice to share.

sorry for using your photo without permission :( had i known, i would have asked your permission first.

HI Lemon,

never mind, I posted these photos ages ago without a signature, so I can't complain if they show up somewhere else. You did not claim them to be yours, so I don't have any problems with it. I just find funny how things go around on the web. Thanks for sharing them, they do fit nicely in this thread

Odd question that someone here might know--why is Chaetodon smithi so unbelieveably rare (other than the one at Waikiki, are there any at all in captivity?), but the Hotumatua Angel is somewhat available?

ARE Hotumatuas available anymore? I remember back in the early 2000s you could get them for less than $1000. Anybody know the back story here?

chaetodon smithi is not rare. it's very abundant in it's location. but it's found in somewhere where there is no collection spot unlike hotumatua i believe.

to get smithi, you have to fly out and take a boat out. then dive there and collect yourself.

i think.

The C. hotumatua comes from Easter Island, there are regular flights to Tahiti and Santiago de Chile. There are even some diveshops, so you can easily get airfills. I was there a few years back and the fish isn't too abundant, I also found it pretty difficult to get close to them, so catching them would require some experience. Chaetodon smithi apparently only lives around Pitcairn, the most remote inhabitat island on Earth. There is no airport and even larger boats have to anchor off shore. Unless you organize your own expedition to Pitcairn you won't get this fish.
