Deflated Sea Cucumber

I have a brown sea cucumber living in my tank, or at least I think it might still be. It has crawled up on a rock and now looks as if it is "deflating" or otherwise getting longer and skinnier. I'm going to stick a hand in and touch it to see if it moves, but I'm wondering how to tell otherwise if it is dead or not? I'd like to avoid an ammonia spike or any other unpleasantness.

Thanks!

do you have a quarantine tank? they release some bad stuff when they die as you probably already know, if he does ammonia will be the least of your worries, the toxins he releases will be much worse because i do not believe they are filtered out.... mike

Yeah get it the heck outta the tank ASAP! I have always had bad luck with them being attacked and then they freak out or if I do a water change that upsets them. I have gone through about three of them and never will buy another.
