Derasa Spawn

Hey you guys, I just did a long overdue 20gallon WC on my 75 mixed reef ...

After the WC I noticed my derasa expelling a smoky liquid from its tube... obviously reproductive in nature..

anyone else had this happen?

I have a derasa and 2 croceas... if the croceas expelled eggs, could these hybridize?... would the larvae survive?

Derasa is about 6 inches or more.. Croceas are about 4inches

spawning is usually brought on by stress, i'm guessing something was wrong with the water you used for the water change.

you need to prepare another water change quickly, as the spawn will pollute your tank and can cause big problems. it may even trigger your other clams to spawn and really pollute the tank. make sure your running lots of carbon and that your skimmer is clean and running at 100%.

i highly doubt you could breed a hybrid in your tank, there is more chance of losing a specimen.

PS make sure you match the tanks params. with the new water change, or you may just trigger another spawning.

Good Luck

Stress?

I did take the Clam out of the water for a few minutes to take the Vermitide snails off.. could this have caused the stress?

Im useing RODI with Reef Crystals... I just replaced the cartriges not too long ago.

Everything else is fine, all corals started blooming back out soon after and this morning everything looks great.. my croceas didnt spawn... they look as nice as ever..

My water Quality before was fine ( 0ppm Nitrates, pH is 8.3, Ca is 450ppm and Alk is 3.5 meq/L)

I run a ASM G2 on my 75gallon... it runs 24/7, I have very little algae, just a bit of Dino's that Im running Phosban for.

Thats odd that spawning is caused by stress!

Should I worry about anthing else? everything is back to beautiful...

I think the spawn, if indeed is caused by stress, was due to me takeing the clam out of the water to get the nasty verm snails off.

The clam was completly closed durring the process. and I only used my finger to pop them off....

any other suggestions?

that is exactly how some clam farmers get them to spawn. so i'd say that was the problem.

i think it is a survival instinct, they may also spawn on the first full moon of the ..... ( making it up ) but in our tanks it is usually stress

Cool, glad to know my makeup water wasnt fouled.

So for future reference, dont take your clam out of the water?

should I worry about any long term problems?
