Detritus build up in sump

Hi RC. I do not have a lot of turnover through my sump and display tank because my return pump is on low. So I get a lot of detritus sitting on the bottom of my sump. Should I leave it because it is easy to suck out during water changes every weekend? Or should I place a powerhead in my sump?

Either works, but I would suck it out with your weekly WC's. A wet/dry vac works great for this operation.

I use a Home Depot BucketHead wet/dry vacuum. Best $25 I ever spent.

+1 on the wet/dry. Someone makes a battery operated gravel vacuum, Tom's maybe, that sucks water up and spits it back into the take after running it through a filter sock. I've had two of them, and both worked great for two or three times and then seized up

A diatom filter (vortex) will work either plain without the media or without the bag into a sock.
