Several years ago I had a RM shipment that was supposed to arrive Friday, and it didn't arrive til Monday. It stayed at FE (8210 Hardy) in AC - most everything survived. Last year I had the same thing with a Florida vendor who sent to UPS - a Yuma was melted, a micromussa survived and an anemone survived but died a few weeks later.
Duncans are EXTREMELY hardy. I have an ORA colony (bought 2 heads last year) where one head came in split and cracked - basically no way it should have survived. Within a month it grew back and the colony is probably 25 heads now - at 10 from each original head.
Still, I'd recommend the bomb squad assist you.

Sorry to hear of all of this.
One curious thing to me is that it was noted that FEDEX beats up and crushes their packages. I've never experienced that in quite a few shipments, and never heard of that on any posts on FRAG before. Anyone had that experience?

OK--let me add from Flag--I have been part of around 7 shipments from various companies--all FEDEX, no problems with shipping. And never heard from any other reefers in Flag of FEDEX problems.

I really think that it is unethical to leave the box sitting there unopened, you never know what may have survived through a fluke, and there should be little to no smell as long as the bags are sealed.
This sometimes happens with our orders at the store, they will get shipped back east and not make it back for another 2 days. We still go through the efforts to save any animals possible, and it can be surprising what makes it.
In short, BAD JUJU to abandon animals without making an attempt to save them. After all, at this point they are free.

I agree with skip. I would go get the shippment. what if something lived? are you gonna just let it die? I think you should go get it and try to save the animals. very sad to see them die. atleast it would be worth a try and see of anything survived. I think for me it would be very selfish if I didn't try to save thier lifes. If you don't want to do it let someone else go get it.

I was supposed to get a call when they arrived at DHL. I didn't and found out here. The reason why I didn't pick up the box is mostly because Miguel didn't tell me too. I assume that DHL will need proof of dead/stressed animals. At this point, I thought it was best to leave the whole DHL matter in Miguel's hands.
It is highly distressing that so many animals were lost. If I had thought that any would be saved, I would have picked them up. The cool packs likely retired quite some time ago. They would have made it to an air conditioned facility by just this morning. I think and have been told that they would be goners by this point in time.

And how long exactly do you think it takes to get animals from the islands? 2-4 days in most cases.
The animals quite possibly were in CA this whole time and experiencing fairly mild temperatures even in a truck. I don't know what was in there, or what could potentially make it, but it is at least worth the effort.
Did you know that in the phillipines and other locales that fish will literally sit in a bag under a bungalow for a week or longer with little to no care?

I understand where everyone is coming from and have to agree with.....
pyrrhus, if your worried about proof, take a video camera, or a neighbor. Atleast see if anything made it. I dont think it is very ethical not to.

Skip, you deal with the largest volume via the different shipping companies. Care to share your experiences with FEDEX, DHL, etc...?

We receive nearly all of our livegoods via airfreight with a commercial airline, sometimes they take the long way to get here.
Fedex ships all of our Deltec equipment (Doug has never offered an option) and has never broken a package once. One time they did lose an APF-600 somewhere in transit, not sure if it was ever found or not, it was replaced by the company. Another time, the shipper had the wrong address on the box and it went to mill avenue and then back to the office, unfortunately by the time we recieved the package all the animals were DOA, I do not blame the carrier in this case. (I hate bulk packing, I want a bag for each animal, my biggest beef with ORA and most breeders)
Up until recently DHL had been handling our Reef Nutrition shipping, no problems there at all, In fact most of the time they were waiting for us to open the doors at 10am to deliver the package. Friendly and great prices until recently too. Never received livegoods through DHL.
I have a friend with an Ebay store that ships most of his stuff UPS and USPS, those two seem to be quite proficient at breaking and losing things. I don't think I would ever receive livestock from them.
All in all, between Fedex and DHL, they are pretty much the same to me, I still prefer good old airfreight with SWA, sure I have to pick it up and sometime flight delays are a PITA, but it has always worked for me.
