Diary of a Newbie's 46g Tank. What to do Next?

Hey Pat!

Thanks! I LOVE the bigger tank - so much better. I am now able to have a Tang and some of the bigger fishes. Also - aqua scaping is soooo much easier.

I dont feel so restricted anymore. Also it really fills in that 4" space of wall.

Nice upgrade man! I really like the 75 also, big enough to have quite a bit of stuff, but not huge in terms of cost and electricity usage. Keep the pictures coming!

The Hammer Coral and Frogspawn are simply amazing!

I got them for 20$ a peice from PHReef. Normally he does them for 10$ apeice but they had 2-3 heads each so we did 20. Their colors are simply awesome! I dont have my atinics on as I mentioned above - but man when hey ar eon watch out.

The hammer and frogspawn are both now about 6" in diameter and have 4 and 7 heads a peice.

rbrice do you have any hammers or frogspawn? Do you enjoy them? There seem to be quite a few varieties.

So the BTA ended up not tanking the slver side, nor big chunks attempted later in the day or hte next day. But maybe he did get some peices as he did look a bit livelier.

Yesterday I traded my 46bf tank and stand for a mated pair of percula clownfish and some liverock. The clownfish went in last night. Now here is the odd thing, percula do not typically host in BTA from what I understand. From all my reading they say it is very very rare.

Yet check out this pic and my apologies for the blurriness - I was a little excited.

Notice the tips are bubbling slightly and the tentacles seem to have a bit more to them. I would have thought the clownfish would have irritated the anenome not made him happier?

i also tried to hand feed him brine shrimp today to via a turkey baster.

Great picture Bill! :) I'd be excited too if my clowns did that.
That's a big piece of silversides. Maybe try making it smaller...I'm pretty sure it would be easier for it to eat.

New Hood

New Hood

Hey guys here is a picture of the new hood. Nothing fancy just a black box to be honest. I put in 2 cutouts for 120mm case fans. I threw is an old fan of mine.... holy crap it was like a wind tunnel! Loud and pushed some crazy CFM!

I ordered a far queiter fan from my favorite computer shop - newegg.com. The fan worked great with just the two metal halides, but now that i got the 2 ARO URI 110 w VHOs in the the temp was rising. Goign to have to order oanother of those quiet fans :)

As to the inside... Rustoleum sells a type of paint called Chrome that is extrmeley reflective. Has anyone tried this on the inside of their canopies? I did on mine and I think it came out great. who knows for sure tho.

Only the flash picture came out not so blurry. I dont have a tripod and I have found it difficult to get non blurry photos.

MaxiJet Mod to approach Tunze

MaxiJet Mod to approach Tunze

Well everyone a neighbor of mine has created quite the stir around here with his mass produced version of a MaxiJet Mod. He has a machine shop and has made a propeller and sleeve for the Maxijet Line that increases the flow by an ORDER OF MAGNITUDE.

PHReef's Maxi Jet Mod

Power Head Prop Mod Q&A

So I ordered the mod from Reefdom and from swung by PHReef's to pick it up since he lives close by. From the bracket to the mod it is very top notch - AND EASY. Literally he handed it to me and said - can you put it togehter? So I took the prop and inserted it into the MaxiJet hole, and the magent sucked the prop right in. Click. The gaurd just went right on over the prop and locked into place.

The brackets are also great. They have fantastic dovetails for fitting into the Maxijet, a nylon screw to lock it in place, and two screws so you can make the MJ Mod as high as 2 inches below the surface to almost 10 nches below.

Once I got home I took the pictures below of the peices.

I then mounted it in my tank - a 75. My goal was to have it blow straight accross the front and hit the SEIO 620 on the other side. In between I have 2 300gph returns that would also crash into the flow. My belief was that this would give sufficient chaotic motion.

Well I turned on the pump.... I think I about gave my fish a heart attack! WOW! This thing pushed so much water in a wide stream/dispersal that my entire tank was being washed about   :D

Hehehe The flow was so strong that it started to even blow my southdown sand around a bit! Amazing... I swear the flow must be upwards of 2500-3000 gph! Too much for me right now.

I tried to mount the pump lower in the tank - too much sand blowing.
Higher in the tank and I started to suck air in - there is a gaurd for this tho.

But have NO FEAR! There is a way to turn down the flow. I understand that I can take a razor and trim the props just a bit to reduce the flow. That will be my project for tommorow!

BTA Status update

BTA Status update

Hey guys... status update on the BTA.

Well he ended up moving about 3 feet across the tank - much closer to the SEIO. He ended up in a perfect spot right a tthe front of my far right arch! He has been looking much better recently. He has started to open up more and more. While he doesnt have the bubble tips back just yet at least he does have some much fuller tips.

The clowns have been playing nice with him. They have hung out in the Frogspawn a bit lately but the keep nuzzling the anenome just waiting for it to be ready for them to move in.

Hey all I am looking to post a more detailed review of the MJ Mod tommorow or after. The above comments wer emeant for more of a first impression.

If work slows down sometime today I will be shaving the propellers and remounting.

I think i need to put the pump lower in the tank and make it point up....
So much flow :) Put this bad boy on the end of a remote control toy boat...

I have a frogspawn in my 65gal it's pretty cool. It isn't the branching though. I would like to put the branching in my 12gal if I can find some.

Does PHReef have a website?

Hey Zoltetov,

I'm here in So. Fla, you mentioned a great place selling nice live rock at $3 lb. Where are they? Contact info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Lee

The Mod is extremely professional and I have been playing around with it for a few days now and will post more detailed thoughts soon.

A few posts up I have posted 2 links to other threads.

Nice mod on the MJ... looks almost too simple.

has anybody hooked an amp meter up to it to see if it increased the current draw???

Hard to believe you can get that much flow from a 13 watt PH....not that I doubt you are getting a high flow... just wondering if its overloading the motor somewhat????

If the current draw is significantly increased, then it might shorten the pump life.....

just a thought to consider....

This mod is incredible! It is machined and looks 100% factory. I haven't put mine on my MJ1200 yet because I'm waiting for my new tank still. But just playing around, I installed it on a MJ400 just to see if it would work and put it in a stock tank I have live rock in. The flow it produced out of the 400 was pretty intense. The PH was literally pushing my hand backwards. I can't wait to get it on my 1200!
