Diary of my LiL 40 Gallon Breeder(Intense)

Wow, lesson learned for a few of us on the super glue. I see I'm not the only one who has a SPS frag lying down sideways on a rock until he gets a hole to stick it in. :)

:) Thanks Marc...I'll be posting a few more pics of my clam later tonight...

:eek1: That somehow just doesnt sound right!

I have a 40 breeder that I'm upgrading right now to a 180 in-wall. It was the PERFECT learning tool. Plenty of room for creative aquascaping, a variety of life, and to watch natural processes happen. I must say that it is the perfect size. Yours is much better than mine though. I love your SPS. I am only running PC's in the 40 so have to wait til I get the Halides up on the 180 before SPS, but the T5's look beautiful on your tank!

Very nice job!

Thank you guys, but there's a new problem....

The little angel I lost to super glue was a model citizen.

The new angel thinks my sps and clam are the china buffet. *sigh* :rolleye1:

I have 3 on their side right now. :D

:sad1:
Things are going pretty rough for you John. This summer is gonna be rough; my tank hit 85 today. Do you have AC? I'm installing the family's next weekend.
Anyways, when you get everything back under control, you can have a frag of my xenia if you'd like. If you wait about 3 months I'll be able to frag my monti for you too. Good luck! Things will get better..

Lost most of the tank on Friday...

The temp hit 91...

SPS- All dead, dying, and bleaching....
Ricordia...All melted away...

*sigh*

:(

AUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Was this avoidable somehow? I'm soooo sorry to see this. :sad1:

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek2:

Did your AC die or something? Man, I'm going to make sure my new system has some sort of backup if I can! Battery operated fans or something! That scares the bejeezus out of me!

Sorry about your losses. Dont give up though!

Well all, it's been a very hectic couple of weeks for me.

I really wanted to let the tank stabilize for a bit and see where I was at.

The problem was that I had my AC unit set at low cool, but the intensity dial should have been set more towards cool. Since I haven't even owned my condo a year yet, I was a bit inexperienced with the units I have.

I closed everything off to facilitate the air, but I was never getting enough from the unit- instant oven.

This is also symptomatic of New England weather. We've literally gone from 65 to 90s and back again. It was unseasonably mild and then bam...90 something. The other night, coming home from work, I could see my breath, and Tuesday was hot and humid; but at night my girlfriend and I walked along some rocks by the shore and we were shaking.

Gratefully, since the incident I've been extra careful, and I've been able to regulate things.

dear Insane clownfish:

I just started your reading your thread today from the beginning and your enthusiasm is something many of us reefers can certainly relate to. This hobby brings a lot of joy, but also much sorrow in the way of major setbacks.

Please don't let this setback discourage you from starting again. I, too, suffered a similar tragedy when i first set up my first reef. I was adding way too many specimens, way too fast.

Go back and reassess your decisions and learn from this experience. Pick your specimens carefully and make sure that they are suited for one another. Any reefer with any significant amount invested in this wonderful hobby can relate to this horrible incident as we all have made many mistakes.

The next time, perhaps you should consider specimens which can live in harmony. Angels and butterflies are generally considered not reef safe. Also, sps corals are extremely demanding with regard to temperature, water quality and lighting.

Of course, the last thing you want to hear right now is a lecture, so I'll end by say that you have our deepest sympathies, we've all been there.

Thanks reef & potito...any encouragement is appreciated at this point...

Since the incident, I've closely monitored the temp, and I've been able to regulate things with the AC....even if the lil woman gets a chill sometimes...:p

I have also done my regularly scheduled water changes since the accident- the one right after was 1/3.

The negative: 90% of my sps bleached. All my Ricordia melted. My Red Discosoma died. Even some of my corraline looked like it was bleaching.

The positive: My Golden Pygmy Angel never really seemed bothered.
The ORA Maxima I got from Just Phish is STILL fantastic and completely shrugged off the incident. My Rhodactis, while definately
more pastel now, is still kicking. My Blue Mili never bleached and is making a comeback-hopefully.

Now let me tell you I am thrilled alone that my clam and angel survived. However, this next item blows my mind. My most expensive piece, an almost baseball sized rock of encrusting, aquacultured Montipora Mollis was completely bleached. It is already 30-40% grown back, and where it had only brown polyps and very few flame red/orange polyps on the bottom, all of the new growth has FLAME red and orange polyps :eek2:  :eek2:

I seriously don't get that one...:smokin:

There is plently of new coralline growth in the tank. All of my snails survived, along with a very interesting hitchhicker crab, and my ceriths continue to spawn. I also have 900,000 pods.

And oh yeah...the 91 degrees killed all my brown wafer algae.

Guess I should count my blessings...:mixed:

You might consider posting some pictures so we can see how the corals recover. It wouldn't necessarily be a growth sequence as much as a recovery sequence, but we'll watch with fascination anyway.

I remember a couple of years ago when MtnDewMan did the same with a couple of corals. He had huge Pocillopora that was exposed to the brutal heat of a MH bubl when the water level dropped in the tank accidentally. He posted pictures of it with the top scorched, and then updated the thread over 6 weeks until it was fully recovered. It was very interesting, and inspiring.

I've had my own share of losses lately, so I can relate to your frustration. Like you, I have to find a way to focus on the good stuff.

wow, i definatly love this thread! I've got a 58 gal. basically the same foot print but i'm being the cheap high schooler and only running the 4*39 watt T-5 TEK fixture, I love mine too. Man I loved your little flame back i'm so sorry about him... but hey thats what happens when you get stuck on glue...
