Did I buy a dead brain?

Someone in another thread said that my open brain looks really dead. After looking at some others I'd have to agree. I just bought it a couple days ago and it looks the same as it did. Did I get ripped off?

its an LPS not sps so you are in the wrong forum, but it isn't dead all the way, for the most part a lot of tissue is missing, however it is possible for whats left to make a come back, will just take time if your system is in check.

It certainly isn't opened and healthy at the moment, but I still see some flesh in the center. I hope you got a good deal on it!

it was only ten dollars. I got it at what I thought was one of my best LFS. I definitely thought this was an sps. We may be able to return it. Should we try?

I spent $35 and $40 for my open brains. So $10 might be worth the gamble. It is up to you. It is in rough shape not only is there a lot of necrosis of tissue it also looks bleached. Is it looking better every day or worse?

Hopefully you will see it inflate more and get some more color soon. If you ever see it's feeders out, usually late at night after lights out, It might help to target feed.
Keep us posted and good luck.

Its a shame . . . at some of the LFS I see corals like that all the time. Problem is when someone who is new comes in and shows interest in it, they will 9 times out of 10 sell it to them. At least you got a good price on it, so maybe the LFS knew about the problem and offered it at the deal of a price. However, they should have told you it would take a lot of work to get it to come back.

Good luck with it. As others have said, there is still flesh on it. If you have good parameters in your tank, it just might make it.

I don't know what the rest of you are seeing but it looks dead as a door nail to me.

The outer edges are pure skeleton, hence the spiny appearance, whereas the middle part of it is more curved, almost smooth in appearance; the smooth is flesh.

Hope you can get your money back but if you cant it's only $10. In the future I wouldn't buy any coral in bad shape like this one if you don't know how to care for it.

You need to go back to that LFS and start slapping people. It's pretty ridiculous they wouldn't mention how bad a shape it is in. They may have assumed you knew but I would think it's their responsibility to make sure you understood what you were buying.

Alright maybe don't slap anyone but you should voice your displeasure with them, even if it was only $10.

Put it in a low light and low flow area of the tank and cross your fingers. It's along shot, but it might pull through. And, if the LFS didn't tell you how bad off this thing was, I'd find another LFS... Good luck!
