Did water change and there are tons of specs

Okay first I should mention I just got my protein skimmer (Octo 2k hang on back) it's creating a terrible amount of micro bubbles that is not the best looking imo. Secondly after doing a water change (tap and prime) I am seeing little bubbles or white dots all thru my tank it's not clear. What can I do? Rodi? What's some good ones and what's involved it setting one up. I just have a kitchen sink. Ty

Tap and prime should only ever be used in a pinch. Even distilled from the grocery store would be better.

Spectrapure, BRS, Buckeye Hydro all good names in RO/DI units. Any one of those come with a faucet adapter where you just screw it onto your faucet and make water. The unit itself can be put under a sink or stored away when not in use.

To clear up the tank for the time being, filter floss(big bag of pillow stuffing from walmart/craft store is the same stuff and loads cheaper) somewhere in high flow area of your sump should clear it up(between a couple baffles works well).

No sump canister filter. Still works?

Purely out of curiosity, if your fish have ich(couple posts below this), why are you doing a WC?

Have we not removed the fish from the DT to be treated in a QT yet?

We are still not certain If it was ich or sand or salt or something else. We got parashield and are monitoring. Not adding new fish right now. We will be building a QT in the near future.

Does it matter which tray the filter floss goes in? Mechanical chemical or bio? I assume its bio Also how much should be added and should it be added with current media or by itself and remove current media?

Also when doing ro di is there a lot of upkeep charge for this thing. I know nothing about them. Will 100-150 get a good one?

The carbon filters are filter floss and carbon. While you don't need the carbon, it won't hurt anything.

As far as RO/DI, time to do some reading. No one here is going to hold your hand and spoon feed you info, you have to do some leg work on your own.

I would budget about 150$ to 250$ for a decent unit, but that also depends on your source water and how its treated before it comes into your house. And yes there is upkeep costs, although very small in the grand scope of things with marine aquariums.

Okay, great - so is one bag enough on the bio tray? Is that really all I need to help get rid of some of these particles? I do have to wonder if the Protein Skimmer microbubbles are partly to blame - i can see them blowing on the powerhead where the skimmer is setup next to it.

I haven't really done much research in them as I the tap/prime mix was working great, but if this particle garbage is going to be in my water suddenly I guess I am going to have to. However a lot of people have spoon fed me their opinions and experiences and it has been amazing, that's the whole reason I am on this forum - to learn, and become more knowledgeable.

I assume this issue started with the addition of the skimmer? Are we overlooking the simple issue here? Seems to me the new skimmer has not broken in yet and is filling the tank with micro bubbles that can certainly make the tank appear cloudy. Give the skimmer a little time to break in and the water will clear itself.

I think you're probably right. I took these black circle things and covered up the plastic piece that pushes the water back into the tank from the skimmer and it reduced the bubbles by a ton.

I wouldn't restrict the " out" flow without a shop-vac ready. This is a hob unit correct?

Yeah don't reduce the flow from the skimmer. All those parts are there for a reason. Last thing you would want is the skimmer over flowing and draining the tank upto the height of skimmer inlet. That would both flood your house with saltwater which basically destroys everything that gets wet and the skimmer pump will burn out since it will suck air and run dry.

It's a hang on unit, correct. But putting the black carbon things over the top (like it says to do in the instructions of the skimmer) seems to be just removing the microbubbles, but there is still plenty of airflow you can see it working well, it does not look like it's any danger of overflowing at the cup, and the water from the cup side to the side that pushes the water in is flowing like it always has. I am keeping an eye on it, first sign it shows where it looks like it's getting too high or the flow looks wrong I'll take them out, but having those bubbles i my tank looks terrible and I'm pretty sure the fish hate them, as they all went to one side of the tank that had less bubbles.

Right now they are swimming all over the tank again.

I decided to take your guys advice and I removed the black carbon circles from over the holes and moved them up to above the plastic piece, but now I have a bazillion microbubbles :(

I really hate this skimmer (octo 2k classic protein skimmer from BRS) It makes so many horrible bubbles it makes my fish tank look meh. I spent over 3K on this tank and not for it to look like this.

Any ideas what I can do to stop these bubbles? I am really close to taking this skimmer off returning it.

You can give the skimmer some time to break-in. (patience grasshopper). My Octopus skimmer discharged a ton of very fine micro bubbles when it was new, once it broke in the skimmer settled in nicely and have not had any micro bubbles since.
