different species, perculas and ocellaris are located in different places, percs often have more random coloration and always have larger white bars. Their middle bar is always bigger and more spread, plus they have larger black borders. Perculas are slightly less hardy and more agressive than ocellaris. And finally... NEMO is an ocellaris, not a true perc.

Heres some things Ive gather in my years of this hobby. Perculas are usually a darker, richer orange. The black markings are a lot wide and fuller. The perculas usually have a shorter dorsal fin than the ocellaris. It also has one or two more dorsal fin spines. Perculas heads are more defined. I dont know, sometimes I just cant tell.

Perculas are found in the Solomon Island and the indo-pacific, while Ocellaris are found in the Fiji and Tonga regions.

I had a Female Percula and a Male Ocellaris. They were both awesome tankmates. They never bothered anyone. They are great fish for any type of aquarium.

You can typically distinguish percula from ocellaris by the color of their eyes ... true percs will have lighter irises while the ocellaris have darker ones. You can also distinguish the two species by dorsal fin ray count, but that is a little tough to do from a practical perspective. As a general rule, if you see an orange and white clown with anything more than solid black banding around the white stripes, you can be pretty sure that it is a percula (except for Darwin ocellaris, which are predominantly black and white, sometimes with a bit of orange on the face). If the black banding is very thin, then you should look at the eyes since some percula will look absolutely similar to ocellaris (in terms of body coloration and pattern.

thanks. what about as far as temperment? the reason i ask is because you can look all over the internet on any subject and find different answers about everything. contradicting eachother etc. just looking for some peoples personal expierience

Like I said I owned both. They paired up nicely and didnt bother any fish. Mishap has the same combo. His never bother any thing either. I know countless people that have either both or one of the other. IME both species tend to be the nicest fish in the hobby.
