Diferences in Snails and what RT has that is good

With the reeftopia order comming up I was wanting to know the pros and cons of the different type of snails. Any good articals out there with what the different types are targeted for? I found this artical on Nerites when I was reaserching the difference between the virgin and regular ones I found interesting.

Also all my turbos just seemed to hang out on the back glass and never seemed to do much. I never really had a alage problem to deal with but since we mag float our glass do you need very many? Do they really keep the rock clean from ever getting alage problems? Maybe I never had issues because I had plenty of snails and they did there thing when I wasn't looking?

I like the idea of the ones who stir the sand and eat uneated food from the sand, the cerths I think they are, but just am not so sure about the turbos doing much that Tangs, angles and other algae lovers like emerald and sally lightfoots don't do anyways....

BTW I witnessed a big sallylightfoot rip the head off a huge featherdusher in one of my tanks a few years ago. He carried the head around munching away and I have read other reports of them eating polyps such as zoes...FWI. I am getting one for my kids tank as they are neat but beware they can do damage sometimes. The duster grew another crown eventually but man was I mad at the crab.

Also was wondering if anyone ever has kept the horseshoe crabs. They are just kinda neat for kids but I know nothing of them other than they are sifting the sandbed looking for the benificial things needed to run a DSB which I am not planning on doing in the display. Will they prey on my .75 a pop cerths? How is there longevity?

If the porcelan crabs come back instock they are neat little buggers. My freind has had 2 in a 29 for about a year and they are cute filter feeders and neat to watch spread there arm out catching food.
The emerald crabs do a great job just running around keeping things clean and love alage also...Another critter instead of a turbo I am thinking and they also like bubble alage which seems to always find its way in on frags....

My main thing I want addressed with snails is the shallow sandbed I am keeping and the film of junk that always seems to get missed right down next to the sandbed unless you dive deep with the magfloat and risk picking up sand causing scratches. What do you all think is my best options?

Ok, just wanting to ask questions and not get the reeftopia thread off topic!

ive been wanting to know this as well...thanks for bringing it up....i dont know too much so i always played it safe with just purchasing astreas, nass, and ceriths

Also for those who haven't got stuff from Reef topia I love there fish prices. I have ordered at least 5 royal grammas from them over the years and they are always very nice. They just went from $6 to $10.50 I saw but still a great must have fish IMO for the price. I have also got the black cap basslet 2x and he is a absolutly beautiful fish. A little shy but super pretty and very cheap compared to other online sites. Mine disaperaed in all the moving tubs and tanks this summer so I definetly want another one if they come instock again. Only thing I do not like about the fish from there is they ship them in a very, very small bag of water. I guess they do fine that way or they wouldn't keep doing that but man, drip acclimating a fish who starts out in less than 1/2 cup of water??!!?? You are done in like 5 min...

I know Wayne has had good luck with the bali red sponge which I would like to order, anyone else get it?

How about the other sponges? I am interested in the corky sea finger also. I have just never tried any of there sponges or tree things. How is the survival rate?
OK gotta run, just thought I would throw out some questions and experiences with ordering from RT and hopefully help some new folks better pick there critters they order from this disscusion.

From the artical I read the nerites are mainly for film alage, slime alages and diatom control. At least thats what I took from reading it... I think. ;) I kinda rushed through it.

I know from a few years experience I am not gonna go with any hermits this tank. I can't stand to see them rip each others arms off and eat each other, not to mention rip your snails apart! I may give in and get them if I have a outbreak of hair alage but till then I think I will do without the canabilism! I wonder if the micros are just tiny baby ones or stay real small for life? Hermits are cool to watch, short of ripping each others eyes out, so is there a variety that is kinda safe with snails and each other?

I once had a Sally Lightfoot tear up my purple tang. I kept removing fish, thinking theywere doing the damage and it ended up being the sally lightfoot. I'll never have another. The purple tang lived, but nearly lost all his fins (now grown back....)

OK guess I'll cancel the 3 sally lightfoot, but would you add some cerths for me. (Angela) about 12 I guess should do, I don't have too much junk algae growing. Was busy all day built Rhett his canopy for his new halides. Also heard from the guy selling the RBTA and will pick one up for Erika's tank on saturday.Guess I'll Surf around for awhile, talk at you later.

I am getting one for Claudias tank. They are neat but I just will keep an eye on it. I would say 95+% of sally lightfoots are just fine in a reef setting but just wanted to throw it out there they have been known to cause some trouble. The kids all like to watch them and they are easy to catch so go ahead and get them if you want. Both my girlfreinds have them and they never cause trouble.
I definetly will be looking up the RBTA guy down there as soon as my tank is ready. Glad you got Rhett set up with the lights and canopy going!

I have one large Sally Lightfoot we've had for 2 years and it's doing great and haven't harm a thing yet. Keeping my fingers crossed for that one. I know they can be vicious when they grow big. Same with Emerald crabs. The only reason I lost all my green chromis and smaller fish was because of the coral banded shrimp and the darn Regal Tang that harass them to death, bites off their fins, etc. I have ordered just about all the snails they have on reeftopia. I would say one of my favorite is the Star Snails because they are neat looking, but they don't seem to last very good. But I really like the last order with the Virgin Nerites, they are pretty to look at and moves around a lot. I like the Fighting Conchs, they are the ones that's moving my sandbed around and keeping it clean. If you have any question about any of the snails on reeftopia, feel free to ask me since I've had them all at one point or another...
