Digital SLR vs. Digital

that would depend on your photography experiance and the Lens that is on the DSLR as well as how much of the S2's manual you read.

any experienced or pro photographer can take a better picture with a P&S than I can with my DSLR

if you're going to use the DSLR in auto mode as a P&S then you're wasting your money (if that's what you're asking, then the P&S will be fine)

Not nessisarily. if you get a good lense, depending on what you are photographing the DSLR even in the easy modes will create better pics. with DSLR's it is all about the lens. but be prepared to pay more than the camera body cost for the lens...lol...

if that's all he's planning on doing, I dont really see him buying a bunch of lenses (I think you were indicating that by the lol and agreeing)

i suppose. i guess it would be based on his budget and how far he intends to persue photography.

So in a nut shell, if photography is going to be an aggressive, expensive, time consuming, lovable hobby just like keeping a reef itself...then yes a DSLR would be better. If you want a camera soley to take pictures of your reef and aren't going to get into photography as a hobby itself (and willing to spend $$$)...then that is why they make Powershots.

A DSLR on the automatic modes (especially with the kit lens) is nothing more than a very expensive Powershot.

If your willing to spend a week learning the basics of exposure and are willing to spend money on a lens, then a DSLR will enable you take much better shots.

Look for this book Understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson in your local library or at a book store. If after browsing through the book it's making sense and your interested get the DSLR. If on the other hand your not getting it or don't want to bother with it. Then get the P&S.

For anyone with a DSLR Bryan's book is a must read!
