dino experiment

You can not sell antibiotics without a prescription in any country in the EU I believe. Atleast you can not where I am from (Sweden) and you can buy this there. Also, and I know this is not exactly scientific...lol.... I have yet to put my nose near any antibiotic and not have to control my gag reflexes. This stuff is virtually odorless.

I just used it and it does something to surface tension as it causes skimmers to go nuts instantly when added....and I mean NUTS!!!!! I started dropping it in and got to 40 drops out of 85 (mayby20 sec) required before mine turned into a fountain. It also killed a tiny patch of Caluerpa (within 24 hours) I had growing and this would not be affected by antibiotics. All fish and corals are totally unaffected...unfortunately so is the reason I was using it, Calothrix I thought, a type of Cyano. Maybe I have to rethink my diagnosis.

My guess would be a powerful oxidizer combined with something else that makes the skimmer react so violently.

It has been several days since my water change and no dinos so far.I ran carbon as well and am now running gfo.The one thing i did get was a bit of cyano in a few spots although i will take that over the dinos any day as i know how to get rid of that_Kieth

Well, after Peroxide and Kalk (high PH) have failed to take these things down, I have ordered the Algae X for the next battle. What I have appears to be very different from the kind of Dino's from what other's have. Mine is basically in the substrate, it is reddish algae with many bubbles forming on it. They sort of anchor on the reddish strands then pull it up into the water column like a hot air balloon. They release rather quickly and don't create the messy strands like the pictures of the Green dino algae. If I had a microscope I could definitely confirm Dinos, but it sure doesn't have the cyano characteristics at all. If it was cyano, I am sure my aggressive Zeovit CS/Zeoback and ZZ/Biomate regime would have impacted it. It also is not slimy nor does it form the mat on top of the substrate.

The problem is that there are thousands of spieces of both Cyanos and Dinos acting very differently and looking very similar :( What I have looks like a really expensive camel colored wool sweater...no bubbles...so that should narrow it down to just a few hundred possibilities....lol. I am now leaning towards some type of Dinos but...who knows.

I have been Dino free since last Friday. I continue with my AlgaeX treatments, but this has worked for me. I am a happy customer!

How did your inverts and corals fare? I am starting to think about trying this but am a little nervous since I did read about someone losing a clam...which I have.

funny you say this, cuz after my water change and running carbon and GFO I too saw a small amount of cyano on the back glass.

Do you have a pic of this? be interesting to see

The 5 days of lights out did the harm. Since lights back on (started last Friday), everything that looked sickly is back to normal or close to it. My snails are active and more so now.

No worries on my part about using this product, I had two choices, let Dino take over or AlgaeX..

I am starting to feel the same way, this algae is killing snails left, right and center and I feel my tank has become a part time job rather than a hobby to enjoy :(

Might give it a go since Chemiclean did very little and peroxide just seems to slow it down. Or....mayby hurl my tank out the window and upgrade!!!

I have had tanks for over 20 years and this is by far the most frustrating thing I have battled. It doesn't matter how well you take care of your system....it just keeps growing and nothing you do changes it. It likes dirty water, clean water, no flow, lots of flow, low ph, high ph...it loves everything! To add to that, when y6ou have brushed every speck of a rock and your nutrients are a solid zero....it just grows back. It is as if it can live of a rock and nothing more,

I feel your pain. 8 months I battled this stuff. I have no regrets on using it, had I just tried the AlgaeX 8 months ago, I could have saved a lot of work and stress.

I feel the same way, this stuff is evil. Thought I had it beat with cutting back on the lights and adding peroxide, but it's back.

For those who have tried Algae X, how long have you been dino free since dosing? JustinGr, you're at about a week?

Yes, one week, but after my usual lights out before AlgaeX, I had the Dino back in 24 hours or less. Right now, crisp white sand!

I'm coming up on two weeks since I blacked out my tank for 6 days, dosed peroxide at a rate of 2 ml per 10 gallons 2x a day, and bumped up my pH to 8.6 for a day. I'm not ready to declare victory yet, but there hasn't been any sign of them.

Here are a couple of pics taken this evening. My Ultra Algae X won't get here till Tuesday, so I continue to siphon the substrate to keep it under control.

And my female Blue Throat Trigger hamming it up for the camera!! She chased the male away so she could have the camera all to herself!! LOL!!

For all you Algae X users, about how many doses did it take? I have a 135 and just want to make sure I get enough, was considering 2 bottles.

I ran it for 6 doses (12 days) in a 75 (80 gallons of water with sump). I have not dosed since last Friday, and no return at all, things look great!
