Disaster happened, need answers...

Hogfish77

In Memoriam
I just had a disaster losing hundreds of dollars worth of fish including juvie blue face angel, juvie emperor angel, orange shoulder tang, cuban hogfish, etc etc... Some died to ich, most died to velvet(the ones that did...died quickly). So it's possible to have multiple parasites in the tank? I didn't have a qurantine tank big enough for all those fish and was real busy the week I first saw the hippo tang got ich(from stress, bad water quality I believe). So only remaining fish are the pair of black/white clowns and a small red coris wrasse. The clowns have visible ich spots all over but are still swimming around. I took all three and put them in a 10g QT tank. Started treating with Coppersafe. Wish me luck on these 3.:(
My Questions..

1. Does the QT tank necessarily need to be fully cycled? Cause mine 10g isn't at the moment. I used water from the main tank.
Since it isn't fully cycled, do I have to do more water changes during the QT period?

2. So how long do I leave the main tank fishless? Was it a month or longer?

3. 2. I only have a few hermit crabs and a few heads of frogspawns, and of course Live Rock. During this fishless period do I have to feed the tank anything? Like drop a few pellets for the hermits? Or will the ICH and Velvet B@stards eat on those too and stay alive??? My Questions..[/B

a QT tank should be cycled. a hospital tank that you are going to medicate, should not, and can not be cycled. the meds will kill any bacteria in the water. a hospital tank should have daily 25% water changes due to no filtration.

velvet will take 8 weeks to clear out. if some of your fish had velvet, they all do. some are more tolerant to the disease. i had a damsel that i couldn't catch last 3 weeks with the disease before he died.

you can feed your hermits, but i doubt they will need it. ich and velvet can only survive/breed on fish, so you feeding the hermits will not keep the disease alive.

best of luck, i battled velvet a few months ago. brutal disease. best treatment is formaline. i like QuickCure. it's cheap, and works great.
