Disaster strikes, 3 tanks!

Chlorine does not take two days to kill, but some other things may, or something that just kill enough animal that start a crash a day or two later.
If the only thing common is top off water, then top off water is what cause the problem, or something in the air.
Good luck.

BTW, I think tap water is find, but if I use tap water for top off, then I would change water much more often.

You said that the tanks are in the basement and the fish were gasping at the surface. Is it possible that the O2 level dropped to low in the basement? Are there any compressed gas tanks, like CO2 stored in the basement that could have leaked? Does the basement have any ventilation?

I work with domestic water and utilities and it is very possible that the water was contaminated from the tap and the city never told you. This time of year they are gearing up their chlorine for the heat.

did you have a power outage while you were gone? I lost 4 tanks of fish, fresh and Salt to a power outage. You may want to ask the neighbors. I am so sorry to hear of all the losses.. I cried for weeks when that happened to me. I actually got out of the hobbie for a few years over that. I had the tanks set up for several years. Now I'm in it again. Don't let it get you down.
