Display tank water in quarantine tank

I'm setting up automatic water changes on my display tank and I'm wondering if it would be okay at the times I need a quarantine tank can I just divert that water into the quarantine tank and have an overflow to the drain. So in essence I would also be getting automatic water changes on the quarantine tank as well.

Depends on why your QT'ing.

If your trying to get rid of a disease from your DT, your also going to add it to your QT. If its just to observe and treat new fish/corals, should be fine.

What he said. Assuming a disease free DT, you'll have no problems. That's how I always do it. It's also very easy to acclimate the fish to the water conditions in the DT that way!

That's exactly what I do. Lots of advantages, and no real disadvantages that I've found. Been doing it that way for a long time too. Just make sure there's no way to back contaminate the display.

be careful that the qt is far enough from the dt that you don't have a risk of airborne contamination. I don't think you can have it right next to the dt, even though that would be easiest for most plumbing setups.
