Divers die collecting "cool" rare fish

This will always be a problem when safety concerns run contrary to profitability. Even in Hawaii where you'd think we'd know better, many divers have been killed or crippled from risky diving.

You can't blame it on the consumer, though. Nobody knows where all of their products come from, and workers die every day producing all sorts of goods that are more commonplace than aquarium fish. Unscrupulous employers are a fact of life in most parts of the world.

Steve, do you know how much the divers are paid for their ventralis? I don't usually even bother to collect longfin anthias, because the cheap ventralis from everywhere else drive down the value. Never mind that their survival rate is horrible.

They are paid weekly salaries averaging $150. - $175. a week.
So, if they catch 150-175 fish a week they are effectively paid a buck a fish. That could include coral beauties, lemon peels, flame hawks, flame angels, imperators, pictilis, genicanthus species , ventralis and hooded fairy wrasses...etc.
On some highly coveted species, a commission may be paid as well depending on the company.
Steve
