hey there! i got bitten by the same bug that made me setup a reeftank because of diving, when i tried UW photography.
i always tried to take photos when snorkelling, but those single use plastic cameras were not good to produce anything else than memories, rather than sharp fotos. when going to bali for a few weeks 2 years ago, i decided to try the real thing and got myself an ultra compact UW-set: sony tx5 + dedicated housing with a nano flash. the setup produced some nice photos, and still love it for the wide angle and manta pictures of that holiday. nevertheless, the pics lacked a certain sharpness, and still were better snapshots than real pictures.
see my bali pics!
i got myself an e-pl3 from olympus plus the olympus dedicated housing, which i took to my one month trip to vietnam. in relation to the sony (palmsized even in the UWcase), this was quite a package, and for 4 days of diving maybe to much, but i had to try it. when i received the housing, i was quite shocked about its size, as the pen pl3 is quite a small microfourthirds camera.
for the results - i loved the diving there even though visibility was nowhere comparable to what ive seen on my trip to bali, and the results were, to be honest, not worth the extra 1000 dollars. BUT i have learned the potential of this system, and was not able to use it to its fullest. i also learned about its limits and what i might need to get the results that make me happy: a macro lens and a better strobe, i already have the inon s2000 and inon lens in mind. my current strobe has 3 inensities to chose from, where the s2000 is able to read the cameras strobe and imitate it, plus it has some more power and will fire more often with one charge.
enough of the words, here are the pictures (out of 500 the better ones, edited but not for backscatter)
