Hey everyone
I have a intrest in setting up my little 0.5gal tank into a nano tank with only LR/LS but i just wanted to knwo if i should use a small filter and what everyone thinks of this little experiment.. and how much lighting should i use??

thank you very much everybody tell me what you think because im waiting :)

i would use an airtube and pump to create circulation and gas exchange. I have used the RedSea Aquavase (.75 gallon) as a specimen pico and isolation tank for years. It has a 9w compact flouro which was a little low but sufficient. Coralife makes a 50/50 screw in bulb that is cheap $10 and can fit into a standard socket. i think it is 10-11w. CORAL magazine did a good article in their April/May 2004 issue on the science of sustaining pico reefs www.coralmagazine.com. Also a lid is useful to prevent evaporation and huge salinity swings

sidenote...the pictured tank was only temporary for the turbo and fiddler...turbos need more algea than a tiny pico can generate and fiddler crabs need unsubmerged rock or they will drown

hey would this filter/airator i think be good for my 0.5gal?? its the Tetra Whisper 3i In Tank Filter or would the Tetra Whisper 10I Internal Filter be better for water filtration/circulation and i have a air pump i can hook with a air stone??? what do you guys/girls think?... thankyou

you might want to go with an external filter as an internal will decrease your total water volume. The Azoo Palm Filter is tiny and has flow control and is only $6 thru Foster & Smith. The airstone and pump should be sufficient tho.

yea like my air pump is hooked up to my 35gal cichlid tank but il just add an adaptor to the nano...would it be best if i used both air pump and filter

it won't hurt...as long as the filter has flow control.... half a gallon is small. I can fax you the pico-reef article from CORAL mag if you want to PM me your fax #. It's 14 pages
