DIY 10 gallon fuge?

Making a 10 gal fuge and will have an input chamber with skimmer, middle area will be fuge with cheato followed by a couple baffles to reduce any bubbles.

My question is what is the purpose of bioballs between the baffles that I have seen some use?

It depends where the bioballs are placed. At my work, we have a 90 gallon reef tank with a refugium. We have the area with all the plants etc., then the water flows down a few bioballs. The balls are completely submerged, which completely ruins the purpose of them. Im guessing that is what you are seeing. When the balls are completely submerged, they dont really serve a purpose.

Maybe it is to slow down the water? or help reduce salt creep / spray?
