DIY 20L Sump

I've searched all over and it seems like a lot of setups have an under, over, under bubble trap after their fuge... How does that work if you have sand in the fuge? Wouldn't the sand end up blocking the first "under"?

Would this setup work?

Also, I've read that the baffles should be 11 1/2" width to fit into the 20L and still have room for the silicone. Is that correct?

Hopefully this will be a quick and easy thread for you guys/gals! :)

Just swap the 8" "section" with the 9"... And flip flop the 8" section, that way the bubbles cannot go under the divider, and the sand doesn't block the flow... Or another way of looking at it, would be, the "return" section is where you would want your heater, skimmer, etc... ;)

An under over under bubble trap can promote stagnate surface water from what I've heard. I use over under over. Your diagram shows how you would want the traps. You want the baffles slightly undersized so there's no pressure on the sides of the tank from them. The silicone will fill the voids.

Thanks for the input, everyone. One last question - If I did over, under, over for the bubble trap, wouldn't that last "over" create bubbles in the return section if the water level in the return area is lower and has water falling into it?
