DIY LEDs - The write-up

As far as I can tell, only the vendor. As long as it is a Regulated switching power supply and can power the buckpucks appropriately, it will work.

Welp ordered enough parts to make a strip of blues and whites...
• 2ea 24VDC @ 6.5A POWER SUPPLY
• 6ea CREEXRE-RB, Royal Blue Cree® XR-E Star
• 6ea CREEXRE-W107, White Cree Q5 XR-
• 1ea 3023-D-N-1000mA Wired BuckPuck
• 1ea 3023-D-N-700mA Wired BuckPuck

I am hoping to bump up the light with my power compacts, before I go all out and change over to the LEDs. Just a little starter project to see if I can actually do this.

Thanks for all the info Soundwave.

Awesome thread, just enough detail for someone as dumb as myself to possibly pull this off. :)

I'll let you know when everything gets here whether or not I had a fish fry or was able to make it work.

Thanks...In my book 15 bucks sound better that 45...

Yeah but if you buy 48 you save another dollar!

They're the same.

Speaking of cheap. Deal Extreme has got crazy prices on the CREE XR-E Q5 Cool Whites.

I see that they have a part listed as:

"Cree XR-E R2 (WG) Emitter on Premium Star"

What does the R2 designate in this case? I'm used to seeing bin codes with "Q" followed by a number(i.e. Q4, Q5) and I cannot find any information on what the R2 bin means, or if R2 even is a bin. I did some searching on the web and it looks like the "R" bins are just a continuation of the old nomenclature and are higher output/watt than the Q5 bin (which I used to think was the brightest XR-E available.)

Can anyone shed some light on this (ha ha) or provide documentation on "R" binned XR-E chips?

I have to warn you. Before I get pics posted, the tank has changed. No more leathers. Lots more sps.
Just curious, are their no more leathers due to problems?
of just normal migrating to new tanks? :D

The XR-E series comes in bins and color codes. The bins include the P4, Q2, Q4, Q5, and R2. Q5 is the most common and second brightest. The R2 are the brightest (and most expensive).

Then comes color. For cool white you want to look for WG. For Royal Blue it is D3.

I took the leathers out because I have heard that they can irritate other corals downstream. They also have the tendency to get huge so I got em out. I'm on my way home with my new german blue digi so as soon as I get that situated, pics will come.

Here's a study they did comparing bulbs with different Kelvin ratings and it's effect on growth:

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/12/aafeature1

If you take a look at the results, it seems has the higher kelvin rated bulbs generated better growth in Acros. I learned something new because I always though that the lower Kelvin rating gives better growth, but higher Kelvin gives better color.

Continuing with the article, it also says that the red spectrum is shown to actually detrimental to growth.

Here's additional reading.

So I guess my question comes to this - the Cree XRE - Q5 has a kelvin rating of 6500k (not so much worried about the Royal Blue) Should we be looking at higher kelvin rated LEDs?

OK...

This is a quick FTS...

This is the browned out Acro that I got a few weeks ago. Starting to look like something!

This is a monti. Not sure what kind, but it grows pretty funky.

Since the LEDs, I started moving into more SPS. I have added many montis, a lime green cap, an idaho grape cap, purple digi, orange digi, green digi, german blue digi, another blue/grey digi, big undata, bonsai acro, yellow cup, red goniopora, green birdsnest, green stylo, and a bunch of others. Now I need to wait and watch them grow.

I've noticed that all my corals are coloring up again as well. I'm getting a nice orange out of my previously brown Rhodactis. And the blue spots are returning to my superman shrooms. They are getting bigger rather than smaller, and my anemone just split! That's awesome! The green Star polyps are growing like crazy and they have never been greener!

I just ordered a pair of those $15 power supply's posted a little while back and a soldering gun. I was just too excited to hold back.

Now all I need to do is get cracking on finding some acrylic and making my tank. :p

Thanks Soundwave for the pic, i love it. As soon as my house is sold and moved to the new one i will for sure get into it., again thanks a lot!
