I do think you need some artistic skill if you want things to look good in the end. I think if I tried this I would end never end up getting a look I wanted.

Where do you get acrylic shavings and any other types of sand that you would suggest using safely?

Offer to sweep up an acrylic fabricators shop for the shavings in return...after all NOTHING is free...They may just give you a ton of it...

Caribsea products are "safe". (or your favorite brand x) Yes they cost a few dollars, but you know where they have been and what has been done to them. Purchasing substrates from home depot (big box stores) is a craps shoot.

I have made a batch of rock, what's a safe amount of time to let it cure before putting into my tank?

For me, I wait until the fresh water curing tank's pH returns to normal (as it was before adding the rock)
