diy overflow

As long as you drill the side of the tank and not the bottom it should be alright, because the bottoms are usually tempered glass, which means if you do drill the bottom it will usually make a nice big crack throught the whole piece. But you should be alright drilling the side and using a drain kinda like Gary M's. i have found the best tool to use is a dremel, it wont be as strait of a whole but it doesnt chip and weeken the glass like a dimond whole saw does...IMO...but i am not a big fan of the over flows... good luck...
DISCLAIMER, if you deside to cut it because of what i said and the tank cracks i take no responsibily for the tank...srry had to throw that in......i havnt cracked one but i have heard of people doing so...

I remember reading that pretty much all 55's are made from tempered glass (all panes). You may want to try an RC search before drilling.

EDIT: RC won't let you use the search parameter "55" since it's not three characters long:rolleye1:

I have one that says that the bottom is tempered, says nothing about the sides. But from messing with the glass and taking 2 55 gallon tanks apart, I do believe that one out of the 2 had tempered sides although there was no indication that it was, the glass seemed stronger and didn't crumble when prying it with metal tools. (don't ask)
