DIY Reef Controller

I really need to review the rules on here about talking about this kind of stuff, as I really don't what this thread to get shut down.

In the future please pm me about this kind of thing just in case.

Just to be clear, I am making NO profit on this project. I am not in this to make a profit, only to get people interested in hobby electronics, DIY, and to provide a viable open source reef controller option to anyone interested.

That being said, I am not 'charging' anything for the boards. All I ask for is that you reimburse me for the actual cost I paid for the boards that you would like.

the rules here are at mods whim imo, afaik if you sell it it's not allowed, that's what got jarduino shut down and moved to another forum

Jarduino was not selling, his first sketch was free then if anyone wanted his beta versions then it was donation and totally up to the individual which in turn helped him buy other equipment like the full atlasscientific kit for $400 and the wifi shield etc

so even donations are not allowed I guess

there's some magic list of banned sites too, no idea what sites are on it, but every once and a while I can tell one is filtered into something else

Sounds about right, its daft as surely the mods dont expect folk like Nick or Jamie to be out of the pocket helping their members out takes hours and hours of work the code i am now is near 8000 lines and still not finished, if you dont want to donate simply do not bother cant see nothing wrong with it myself tbh

I can completely understand why they don't want people selling things for profit as they do have specific forums for that which require a paid membership. I have no problem with this fact as it makes perfect sense.

Although I do not agree with the rule about donations, it has to be respected on the forum, to keep the thread alive.

I do believe however, that as long as the donations are used to progress the project forward, everyone involved benefits and should be allowed.

So just to be safe please send me a pm or an email (nkd5026 at gmail) if you want to talk about requesting the boards.

And as far as the 5" screen goes, everything works perfectly with the Itead shield, including the touch screen. I am able to get the UTFT and UTouch library to work with the Due, but not Karlsens SD card library. So as of now I cannot load images from the sd card with the Due.

Nick D.

Nice progress Nick I am glad you figured out the problems.

Curiosity question: If I remember correctly the 5 in screen had a built in SD card slot. Have you tried reading from that slot with the 5 in and the Due?

Regards,
Mark

Marc,

The 5" screen does has a built in sd card reader and it works very well with the Itead shield. Although the issue isn't the hardware, I cannot even get the library to compile.

I threw together a basic facebook page for the project if anyone is interested. The page is mainly for people to check updates of the project and how it is progressing. You can check it out at http://www.facebook.com/OkeanosReef.

This should make it easy for people to keep track whats going on and will provide all the links to different resources for the project as it develops.

would really be interested in boards, just to see if could really do this, and if so great then i guess i have a controller......

glad to hear the new boards are working now and that you will soon have a working version of your sketch

I like the logo so far, I was thinking of doing something else with it but haven't got around to it. If anyone wants to mess around with it feel free to copy it from the page and post it here.

I am hoping that within two weeks I can start sending out the boards people requested and have a few videos of the completed GUI running all the equipment up with the BOM for each board.

By the way, the attiny85 can't be programed through usb, only with an isp programmer. So does anyone have any ringtone tunes they would like to have on the chip for their alarms that I could include with the chips?

So I am really starting to get into finishing up the coding and in order to speed up the first release I am going to move back a few minor features until the second release. I would like to get all the basic stuff out to everyone asap before digging in deeper.

All data logging and graphing will won't be included this time around, which honestly isn't that big of a deal since pH and ORP won't be ready until the second release anyways.

Thanks to rmdonovan, dosing pump support will be added into the second release and I now have the pH equipment to get working on adding pH into the controller!

Thinks are progressing nicely and I personally can't wait to start seeing Okeanos controller build photos from everyone!

I really like your build Nick. I have been lurking this thread for a month or two now. I have my own build going on that closely mirrors exactly what you are doing. However, you are leaps and bounds ahead of me, and not just because you started your build before I did. I'm a moron when it comes to writing code, but I'm getting there.

Great inspiration though. I was able to download and get your demo going.
I really like your GUI layout.
I was planning on just running everything off the arduino. I didn't consider making my own boards, but I might now of I get mine to your level.

Just a fan of your work, and wanted to say keep it up!
Looking forward to getting a peek at your lighting arrays so I can make some progress on my code.

PS - to the poster with the Sainsmart gear. You do need to make the wire crossing as pointed out by Nicks picture, but you also have to make sure your SD card is only 2GB and non HD. I think that's why you couldn't get it to work.
The Sainsmart products are a PITA, but once I figured out how to get it all up and working I couldn't be happier with it. What I saved $ I paid for in extra work. No big deal.

5 inch lcd

5 inch lcd

Still waiting on my screen but was wondering, will the code work for the 5 inch lcd now? If I load the code will the pics still come up only covering a 320x200 area, or will I get garbage? I don't have the resources for both screens so I went with the bigger one right off.
