Hi,look on the you tube for " u r a Joey diy overflows"it's an excellent solution.mine been running for over 3 years.not expensive.sump is great idea.all the wildlife that would be devoured in your display tank flourishes here.look on tube again for sump designs.you can make it easily.just buy a tube of silicone and get local glass shop to cut all the sizes u want.get them to polish edges or do it yourself with emery papermake sure it's deep enough and wide enough compartments ( baffles) to accommodate your run pump, skimmer, heaters, etc.

Pics not loading, sorry.one tip regarding your sump, make it deeper than you need.becauase you will need the extra water capacity to accommodate the excess water from d.t when you shut down your pump or in an outage situation.that way,you can run more volume in your sump without having a lower level than you would want. 4 inches deeper or so should suffice.dont rush your sump design! Make sure you got enough room for live rock, chaeto etc.as long as your rtn pump is less than your overflow rate you will have no probs.

You certainly do not need a sump to have a successful tank..if money is tight one can certainly make other changes that would be less costly..
If you describe the problems you have I'm sure we can offer alternative solutions that won't break the bank

Who suggested that he/she NEEDS a sump?

Pump the brakes D. Everyone is just trying to help.

OP - If money is tight I'd also suggest you don't add a sump. while helpful, more expensive.

Bacteria don't need volume. Surface area. Add a sponge block to your HOB filter.

I can appreciate the "don't like everything hanging on the back" sentiment. Krylon fusion paint if available where you live, like flat black, will make all the plastic parts blend in with a painted black back glass. Not perfect, but better.

Hope that helps save some cash.

Good luck.

Hello. The reason i want a sump is for more beneficial bacteria. Tank has no problems. I want to hide all my equipment. You can see my hob protein skimmer, hob filters and heater from the front.

Look for garage sales in your area, the internet or craigslist are good places. You can also check your local reefers club. A lot of small tanks are pretty much give-a-ways. People get tired of keeping guppy tanks. Too much work :)))))) .....Just take it, get it out of my garage. You might even find a cheap return pump along with the tank.. You want all this other junk that i have tooo. You can always upgrade as money permits. Your job will be to find a way to get the water to the sump and back to the tank.
