Do clams release their foot??

About 2 weeks ago I bought a very nice larger size crocea clam. I've had them in the past and have not seen what I came home to today. The clam has been doing fine but today I got home and noticed that next to him almost looked attached to his shell (but it wasn't) seems to look like this white fleshy substance (looked like a clam foot to be honest) I picked it out of the tank and threw it out. I waved my hand over the clam and he retarcted as usual. Loooks fine and is still wide open for the light. Any ideas??

Yeah I have had mine do that as well but they are still thriving and growing. It is their tissue(foot?)at the bottom opening that they release(shed?) I would not be too concerned though.

yes clams can drop their foot. they usually do it when some parameters have changed and the want to move. just keep an eye on him and if he move just let him, unless he decides to flip over and sit on his face
