do dying sinularia or polyp buttons secrete toxins when dying?

A friend was telling me that sinularias, polyp buttons, and mushrooms will secrete toxins when they die off. Mine are currently in trouble and they may die so I'm wondering if there is any worry if they do die off?

well the sinularia (some sort of leather) seems to be losing some of the "spikes" it has. As well the ends of some of the arms are turning grey.

For the buttons, i see holes in place of where some used to be. The mushrooms I have seem to not be doing as well either.

Do you know if there is any danger keeping them in there if they were to die?

well, i just had a xenia die on me, unknown cause as everything else in the tank is doing well. i let it go as long as i could doing a water change every three days, to get whatever toxin may be released. if you a re having trouble with this much livestock all at once, you may have something wrong.

how long has the tank been set up?
has anything died recently?
what are your parameters?

It's been up and running for 3-4 weeks w/ each week adding a new entry, whether it be more rock, or in this case, the mushrooms, buttons, and sinularia at one time.

The rocks are okay...there's algae growth....the snails seem to be doing just fine.

Gee I can't remembe rmy parameters Unfortunately my test kit only tests for Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, and pH (no other test kits yet...in the process)

I haven't checked recently but before adding those new entries all the levels were fine (meaning the traces were either 0 or at a low enough level that it would be on the same level as 0 from the card readout). pH is kind of hard to read because I'm not sure which color the results fit w/ the card. I"m guessing around 8.2 - 8.4

i wish some one else would chime in and help, cause im still pretty new at SW, but it sounds like to me that you either added too much stuff all at one time, or added stuff to close to the end of the cycle (assuming your cycle is over). you really need to test SW (the ones you have) every day, for a while. i tested my water twice a dayt for the first 6 weeks. i added my LR first and LS a week later. i didnt add my first coral until 3 weeks after that, and it was only one shroom rock. after adding my sand my nitrate went down to 0 (to join ammonia and nitrite) within a few days. so my tank was at 0 for all toxins for about 12-14 days before my first shroom went in. you pH is fine, but i would run the rest of the test you have. if ammonia or nitrite are detectable AT ALL then you have too much. id take your corals back to the LFS for them to hold for you until your levels come down for a week or so (that levels at 0 for a week or so, not just for a week).

i really wish some one with more exp. could verify what im telling you, for your confidence and mine.

good luck and keep your head up!! go very slow in this SW hobby and things will come around. one thing i know FOR SURE is that nothing good happens in a reef tank fast.

I started a 180 by adding water, live sand (all live) and all live rock. Some pics in my gallery when the tank just had the rock from my 55 gal. The rock I transferred had mushrooms all over it, and also hermits, snails and whatever else dared to stay in the rock when I transferred. I had an extremely short cycle without any huge spikes. The mushrooms are very hardy and may do fine. Green button polyps may be a little tougher and sunularia is even harder. Your tank may not have completely cycled. A lot of times the spike goes up comes down and goes up again.

kusanagiz, you really need to take back or get rid of any corals, not to mention other inhabitants in your tank. your tank is 4 weeks old at most. nothing living (besides rock and sand) should be in your tank. it is important to do extreme amounts of research before getting started up. i'll bet my bottom dollar that your tank hasnt finished cycling yet. even if it has, it isnt stable enough to keep corals.

my suggestion is to return everything alive and read read read. start with "the concientious marine aquarist" by robert fenner. if you plan on doing a reef, invest in "aquarium corals" by eric borneman. both are absolutely incredible books. the 2 may cost you 60 dollars or so, but i garuntee they will save you hundreds and heartache to boot.

when you do start to stock your tank, you will not want to make new additions each week. right now i think you are just moving too fast. its easy to do in this hobby, its alot of fun. but its alot more fun when things go well. make sure to do alot of research about a specimen before you buy it to make sure that you can adequately house it(and to make sure its compatible)start reading and let the fun begin good luck

wow thanks for the input guys. Really puts me in my place thought i was getting a hang of all this until i added all that rock =T

The LFS i bought my stock from is relatively far away so I'm just going to hope for the best. I bought some iodide/iodine as a recommendation for my LS. Hopefully that'll help?

I was just concerned when i heard that the buttons, sinularia might release toxins if they DO die hence why i posted here.

This has been humbling and I'll have to just take even more time to make sure my tank is ready before i put anything in there.

If your stuck on not returning anything, just keep a close daily, hourly eye on it. I did the right things with the 180 and still am stocking to fast. Hage a refugium, everything established and a cyno problem that will not go away. I'm still a newbie after all this. Read, Read, Read is the best advice, before you put anything in your tank. A six month old tank may still be cycling. Mine is only 4 months old. I have killed a lot of stuff, money and hopes down the drain, so to speak.

make sure not to add anything to your tank taht youre not testing for. there is such thing as too much of a good thing. all params need to be in order for things to survive, much less flourish. honeslty, i dont think that anything is going to survive, so i really implore you to return anything you can, or give it away, or sell it. you may lose a few bucks, but living things are going to die if you dont. im not trying to be hard on you, just trying to help. dead and decaying organisms in your tank arent going to help the situation. its so hard to dig yourself out of a hole in this hobby. all im trying to say is, why start in a 6ft hole?
