Do Fish Sleep?

Hey all,

thanks for the reassurance of the evaporation rate...

my fish sleeps... well, with his face in a hole in the rock, and its tail out...and is absolutely still.

first time, i thought it died...the first NITE.... only to have it move on its own later..

lately, it sleeps all over the tank... sometimes under a rock, sideways...

sometimes, on the side of the tank, against the glass...

does your fish show this odd behavior? and do Fish actually sleep?

Yes, fish sleep. Some wrasses will even spin a cocoon around themselves while they sleep. We also had a fish taht would sleep like you described, with their head in a hole in the rock and their tail sticking out. We also had a foxface that would sleep in the top corner of the tank between the Tunze and glass, in a vertical position. I forget which one of ours used to sleep half in half out of a rock, but yea, it isn't too uncommon :)

My skunk clowns always sleep between the acrylic and a large colony of Zoos. They always face the same way and are always together. It's rather sweet.

I have a seabae clown that sleeps sideways on a rock behind a frag of candy canes. I was told fish dont sleep, because they dont have any form of eyelids to keep light out. But hell I dont know, it looks like they do. :D

Most of my fish also wedge themselves in rock and sleep. Maroon slowly swims in its bubbletip and sometimes lays still. Sometimes my firefishes just lay in the sand against the rocks. The weirdest one is my spotted mandarin, most of the time it wiggles in the sand and partially burries itself and sometimes it just lays there looking half pale like ites dead. I almost took the mandarin out thinking it was dead but the next day when the lights come on its fine.

My percula clown sleeps hovering near the surface, aimed up, treading water.
My green chromis just sort of sleep wherever they end up, on zoos, one sleeps on the sand, one lies on top of a powerhead motor.

Years ago, when my kids were small and we used to watch Sesame Street, they had a song they'd do on the show once in awhile...they'd show all kinds of animals sleeping and sing this song "Everything Sleeps"... Must be true :D

I think the cutest has to be my ocellaris clowns, who snuggle up in their BTA at night. They just lay right in there, like it's a big pillow. :) My big blue tang usually wedges herself between rocks, either sideways or head up. And one time when I was looking around the tank with a flashlight, I found one wrasse peeking at me from a hole in a rock, and another wrasse peeking at me from another hole in the same rock. :)
