Do I stand a chance? GHA and Red Slime

red slime

red slime

im not sure if its the same red slime i had a few years back, Mine was growing on the sand. how i got ride of it was i left my lights on for 36 hours , and the slime went clear and died. I have a feeling it needs a dark cycle to grow. and possibly my MH destroyed the bacteria

I had a bad red slime outbreak a few months ago. I ran lights off for 72 hours and then 36 hours 10 days later. I thoroughly vacuumed the sand and blew off the rocks between the two lights off periods. I also did 15% water changes every week and replaced my filter sock every week for 2 months. Its completely gone now.

the bestt suggestion i have to add is buy red slime remover. It works wonders! All you have to do is put in a few little scoops and turn you filters, skimmers and take out and bags of carbon for 24 hrs and the red slime will be gone! Repeat the same cycle once more 48 hrs later if needed. I know you can buy this product a A Reef Crestion for around $20.00

I've heard the stuff works, HOWEVER the effect on oxygen in the tank can be devastating. if you do go this route, please read up on the oxygen effects. at minimum (1) suck out as much as possible first (2) aim a pump up to agitate the water surface (3) add some air stones.

I have no experience with the product, I've been tempted once in the past from over feeding, but resisted and worked through it with manual removal, water changes and keeping GFO fresh.

just my 2cents

Key on phosphate reduction and clearing detritus and the cyano and green algae will wane. Red slime remover can tox a tank as can dying cyano (see post #10).

After nearly 6 months of trying everything to fix this problem I have had no luck. Although the rock is cleaner than before, there is still a coating of red slime on the rocks and sand.

I'm going to be trying ultralife red slime remover.

Killing the lights, skimmer, carbon and gfo reactor for 48 Hours during treatment. Will do a 25% water change at the end of the 48 hours. To keep the water oxygen level up I increase surface flow.

Any other thoughts please let me know. I'll be dosing in about an hour.

Thanks

Hey Eric...I would make sure to have PLENTY of new water rdy to rock n roll! 25% might be a minimum I'd change. You'll see what I mean when you wake up tomorrow after tonight's dosing.

Good luck and keep us posted!

I would highly recomend keeping the skimmer on full blast.Turn off any auto top off and replace what was removed by the skimmer with salt water ,whitch is going to be much more than usual.

Your probably already know the RSR has an negative effect on oxygen ,and Ph,so that is the reason I think it would be better to keep the skimmer running full blast,as you know its a good gas exchanger and will also help to keep the ph more stable, imo.

Another to consider is everything living contains nitrogen and phosphate ,so this means algae and bacteria.Keeping the skimmer running will help to remove the dead bacteria/algae cells containing those nutrients.

Im not one for pushing advice, but I really think you should reconsider running the skimmer.
GL to you with what ever you decide-Steve
