Do you have a bit of livesand to spare?

Hi there,

I am setting up my 90g tank with 3" of sandbed. I need a little bit of healthy livesand to seed my sandbed. If you can spare a little bit of your livesand, please let me know. I have Figi live rock to trade or pay you $$$. I am not sure how much sand is needed, but I would guess just a pound or two would do.

It would be best if you're near by Des Plaines. Skokies, Niles, Morton Grove, Mt Prospect, park Ridge, Arlington heights would be good.

Thanks much,
Kimha.

Try a local coral shop like Sea Schor or Ocean Design. Offer to buy a little something something and see if they'll through in a quart of bug rich sand.

You going to have to go to Rod's Reef at some point, might as well as do it now. Buy a sweet piece coral and see if he'll send ya home with some sand?

I could give you some but Menard is a great place for that closer to you than Rod. Get a piece of rock from him too.

I am in a similar place, i have all of the sand i need for my 180, but need a sand bed in the refugium in my sump,

I live in Franklin Park & am planning a big upgrade next week. I should have some for you then. Tons of creatures in my LS!

You guys are very generous. Since Doug is closest to my house I will take up on Doug's offer. Actually I have been wanting to visit Doug for quite sometimes now. When I bought used equipments from members here, some of them have beautiful setups. But they all told me ... "You must haven't been to Doug's place yet.

If you want a wider variety of sand creatures, you should visit more than one place for samples. Any time I go to someone's house, I try to remember to ask for a handful of sand to add to my tank (don't always remember though).

When asking for sand, just make sure to ask if they know what's in there.

I have some sand anemonies that Dr. Ron said were not a problem as long as they "don't get out of control". They have spread quite a bit and even found their way into the rock slightly above the sand bed. They capture food etc ... and I once saw what I considered eating an asterina starfish. I recently setup a new tank and would not consider moving any sand from my established tank to the new one.

My 5.5 year old sandbed seems to be doing what its supposed to in terms of breaking down organics and appears to be loaded with bugs - but I just wouldn't want to pass on a known "undesirable".

I also happened to grab some sand from a local that was moving. Turned out it had a few sundial snails (I learned the hard way).

Sand diversity is great, but ask before adding, and dump it into a bowl and examine it before you dump it in your tank!
