Do you know what it is?

Hello reefers
I have this sponge-like mass keep shredding from rock for the last four months...I can suck it out by the hose when changing water or it just came off from rock and flying with the flow...I don't know it is beneficial or detrimental to other corals in the tank, esp SPS...

Here are the pictures...

I would have to see it in the tank, but I believe it is an encrusting sponge. I had this in my reef for some time after the tank cycled. It grew fast but could be pealed off the rock. Sort of a light brown color and 1/8" thick. Consistancy was like packing foam.

As far as being a pest, it died off quickly once nutrients dropped to where they needed to be for SPS's.

thanks NatureNerd...
I think you may be right....I have had this on rock and it grew like crazy when my PO4 was 0.6 and now dyeing since PO4 at 0.04-0.06...I don't know when they died they release PO4 and NH3 back into the tank since my SPS frag near this dying thing are not happy....

I would guess cyano - it can grow in thick sponge-like forms at times. Would be consistent with high PO4...
