Do you need a filter for coral quarantine?

Do you need a biological filter if all your going to quarantine is some corals that don't require food like Zoanthids (that aren't dieing/decaying)

I mean the whole point of a filter is to convert ammonia into less toxic forms, but with no waste/decay coming from anything it seems like it wouldn't be needed

Corals do have waste, there should be some type of filtration.

You don't need much. Barebottom with a single piece of liverock or half dozen pieces of rubble, flow, lights, frequent water changes (I use waste water from water changes on the big tank).

Some people buy a cheap sponge filter and keep it in their sump. Then when somthing needs to go into the quarantine or hospital tank, they pull it out and hook it up in that tank. Then you have an instant biofilter. Just don't put it back in the sump without disinfecting it, a dip in boiling water or alcohol, etc.
