Captive bred clowns will host... My month old perculas didn't take long to host rbta not even their natural host... their urge to find a nem and host I think starts at a very young age.

It's been my experience that captive bred go to anemones just as quickly as wild caught. For my magnificas, both captive bred ocellaris and perculas have gone to them in minutes even when coming from a tank with no anemones. The same thing has happened with CB maroons and RBTAs. I completely agree with deanglr, if a clown is refusing to be hosted, it's probably because the anemone isn't a natural host. From my observations, the attraction to the natural host is purely instinctual and no learning is needed.

My wild caught percula clown wasted no time to sleep on the RBTA. The Captive Bred perc. picasso had to follow her, as she is the boss in this relationship....lol.

I had my tank-bred Oc's for about 10 mos before I finally got an anemone. Got a green BTA; it took about 6 mos but the female definitely hosts it now. The anemone is not quite big enough for both of them, so she is really possessive over it. LOL

IMHO/E, captive bred clowns will seek out a host. Their drive to do so, may not be as strong as in a wild caught clown, so it may take them much longer to find one.

Every single one of my Captive Bred clowns have hosted... As EC said, it may take a while, but eventually they find their host... I had a pair of B&W Occelaris that took over a year to move to an RBTA, but once they found it, they fell in love... ;)

CLOWNFISH DO NOT HOST, Anemones do.

CLOWNFISH DO NOT HOST, Anemones do.

Just so everyone knows.. The clownfish are not the ones hosting anying.. Both are animals, The clownfish lives "in" the anemone. The Anemone does the hosting..

The the question is "Do your anemones host CB clowns?" We can all recognize the term "Host Anemone" it helps to remember.

:)

My captive bred Latz clowns from Hawaii, which have never seen an anemone until my tank, immediately went in in my rose and Ritteri within an hour.

I got a pair of black and white mis-bared off a local breeder last spring. It took 2 months for them to start digging my RBTA. You can tell when it is getting ready to happen.

I have CB percs, and they have hosted an LTA for over 2 years. I added a Haddoni to the tank in (I think) Feb, and it took them until a short while ago to discover it (they are reluctant to leave their LTA.) For a couple months, they mainly hung out in the LTA, but went to the Haddoni frequently. About a month ago, they started laying eggs, and they have chosen the LTA again, almost exclusively. It seems every so often they visit the Haddoni. The female moreso than the male.

My captive bred false percs host my toad stool leather. What gets me is that the leather is perfectly ok with this and keeps its tentacles extended all the time. The female thrashes in it all the time! But if I place my hand near or on it, it will retract. It knows it's ok with her but not me. Crazy.

When I first got them my little ORA Naked clown pair took about 5 minutes to find and move in to a RBTA. I have three different strains of BTA's and they go back and forth between them.

i think i have false CB percs and i just added a GTBA for them a few days ago. ive had the fish for a few yrs with NO nem for them b4. i hope the "meet" each other soon. they tend to stay on one side of the tank and the nem is on the other........

I'll bet of the 7 captive bred clown owners in the poll who haven't had success with their clowns being hosted, 100% are combining an unnatural host species with the fish.

You could be correct and I don't mind admitting my lack of knowledge on this post. We are all here to learn. I have a GBTA I put in my tank is this an unnatural host to false perc's(cb)?
Corey

Yes, ocellaris (false perc) is never found in E. quadricolor (BTA) in nature. In fact, that is probably the two most frequently paired unnatural combos in the hobby. Often ocellaris (and perculas, for that matter) will eventually pair with E. quadricolor. But put H. magnifica in there and see if the ocellaris (or percula) doesn't abandon the BTA in short order. I've observed this on more than one occasion in my tanks.

so you are saying that this is an uncommon host for them but it MIGHT work but not the best choice. i went with this nem cause it came from a local member who has great luck with them and they will stay on rock.....my tank is BB

Corey, It's not an uncommon host, it's an unnatural host. In other words, in nature, ocellaris is never found in E. quadricolor. In aquariums, ocellaris will sometimes (oftentimes) be hosted by E. quadricolor, or even polyps.

E. quadricolor is a natural host for maroon, cinnamon, clarkii, tomato, to name a few.
